NCCU Nipped by UNCG, 64-51

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore guard Jayla Calhoun grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for host North Carolina Central University in a 64-51 women's basketball loss to UNCG on Sunday evening in McDougald-McLendon Arena.

The Lady Eagles pulled within four points with 6:26 left in the fourth quarter before the Spartans closed the contest on a 16-7 run. UNCG leveled its record at 6-6 and NCCU has lost six straight games to slip to 1-7 overall.

Calhoun added four points, two steals, one block and one assist to her career-high nine rebounds in 23 minutes of play as a reserve.

A trio of Lady Eagles scored in double figures. Senior Morgan Jones scored a team-high 13 points and handed out a game-high four assists despite only playing one minute in the fourth quarter. Sophomore guards Rodneysha Martin and Dominique Adams swished 11 and 10 points, respectively. Adams and classmate Deja McCain added five rebounds apiece as NCCU prevailed on the backboards by seven, 38-31.

The maroon and gray committed 15 of its 21 turnovers in the first half, but NCCU had its best shooting quarter of season in the second period stay within striking distance, 38-28, at halftime. The Lady Eagles made 5 of their nine shots attempted in the second quarter for 55.6-percent accuracy. However, freshman guard Nadine Soliman scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first 20 minutes in helping UNCG never trail.

NCCU won the third quarter, 9-8, despite cooling off to just 18.8% shooting in that stanza to pull within single digits heading into the fourth quarter trailing 46-37. The Lady Eagles started the final frame on a 7-2 surge that was highlighted by a give-and-go, fast-break layup by senior Chantal Thomas. The hoop that assisted by freshman Jada Blow pulled NCCU within two possessions before UNCG made its game-ending 16-7 run that featured four made layups and the Spartans going 8 for 11 from the free throw line.

All three of UNCG's double-digit scorers are freshman in Soliman (19 points), Alexis Pitchford (14) and Te'ja Twitty (12). Soliman made four steals, Twitty corralled seven rebounds and Pitchford chipped in six rebounds and three steals.

NCCU will host one more game before the holiday break when the Lady Eagles battle Presbyterian College on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
