PREVIEW: #NCCUVB at North Carolina A&T Friday


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team will try and enter the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament on a high note by winning its regular-season finale at archrival North Carolina A&T State University on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Eagles are coming off a pair of 3-0 road losses in the Sunshine State against MEAC Southern Division foes Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman University this past weekend. The league office announced the 2016 MEAC Volleyball Championship bracket this past week and NCCU (5-16 Overall, 4-5 MEAC) will play Howard University in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. The postseason tournament will be contested in Hytche Arena on the campus of University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland.
 
Three maroon and gray players continue to average over two kills per set in senior Casey Curran (2.35), senior Kelsey Murphy (2.17) and sophomore Whitney White (2.12). Curran tops NCCU with 2.68 points per set. White follows her with 2.64 points per set, which includes 0.71 blocks per set. White has a .255 hitting percentage that ranks ninth in the MEAC. Murphy is coming off her second double-double of the season and she is second on the team with 2.44 digs per set.
 
Junior setter Paige Phillips is sixth in the league with 7.22 assists per set. Sophomore libero Bree Simmons is 10th in the conference with 3.07 digs per set and classmate middle blocker Jazmine Daye is ninth in the MEAC with 0.73 blocks per set.
 
NCCU dropped its first meeting against North Carolina A&T in Durham on Oct. 21. A trio of Lady Eagles posted double-doubles in the five-set affair. Curran tallied 18 kills and 12 digs, Murphy recorded 15 kills and 18 digs and Phillips tallied 41 assists and 14 digs.

The Aggies also went winless in Florida this past weekend against the Wildcats and Rattlers. NCAT (9-13 Overall, 6-3 MEAC) will play host Maryland Eastern Shore in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament.
 
Junior outside hitter Samara Brown highlights play for the Aggies with 3.58 kills per set, which ranks third best in the MEAC. Brown also ranks 10th in the conference with 0.31 aces per set.
 
NCAT has five other regulars that are averaging between over one kill per set with freshman Christa Wilson (2.03) and junior Alyssa Pitt (2.02) topping the group with over two kills per set. Junior Jasmine Lindor is third in the MEAC with 0.98 blocks per set while also providing 1.12 kills per set.
 
Senior Liz Martino (5.97 assists/set) is NCAT's primary setter and sophomore Keniah Rivera (3.70 digs/set) sports the libero jersey for the Aggies.
 
North Carolina A&T improved to 14-6 against NCCU since 2007 with the dramatic 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 15-7 triumph last month. Martino orchestrated the win with 46 assists and 21 digs. Brown and Pitt also logged double-doubles as Brown sported 18 kills and 22 digs and Pitt registered 19 kills and 13 digs.
