ELON, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team had a solid offensive effort in its road match at Elon University but the host Phoenix hit .358 to complete a season-series sweep of the Lady Eagles with a 3-0 non-conference win Tuesday evening at Alumni Gym.
Elon (17-12 Overall) improved to 14-3 in non-conference matches with the 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 victory. NCCU (5-14 Overall) was unable to get into the win column for a third straight contest.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Sophomore
Whitney White led NCCU's attack for a second consecutive tilt with eight kills. Senior
Kelsey Murphy and freshman
Kennedy White both added five spikes.
Junior setter
Paige Phillips just missed a double-double. Phillips orchestrated the Lady Eagles attack that hit .128 with 22 assists. She also led the maroon and gray with nine digs and one of the squads' two aces.
Sophomore
Jazmine Daye led all players with three blocks (one solo, two assists).
ELON HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Junior outside hitter Sydney Busa had a big match for the Phoenix with 19 kills and 10 digs. Elon ripped 52 total kills in the three-set match, with senior Ebony Scott following with eight spikes.
Junior setter Sydel Curry contributed 35 assists.

1ST: Three consecutive kills by
Kennedy White provided NCCU with an early 9-7 edge. The opener stayed close and
Whitney White's fifth spike of the set deadlocked the scoreboard at 18-all. An Elon hitting error on the ensuing play gave the Lady Eagles their last advantage before the Phoenix won the seven of the next eight points to close out the five-point win. NCCU hit .312 for the stanza but Busa blasted a dozen kills for the victors.
2ND: Elon led from the onset and cruised in the middle period by hitting .500 with 16 kills and just 3 errors on 26 attempts.
3RD: A pair of kills by
Whitney White and Murphy, an ace by Simmons and a block by Murphy and
Whitney White soared the Lady Eagles out to a quick 4-nil lead. The Phoenix quickly rallied to level the score at 5-5 before NCCU took its last two leads at 6-5 and 7-6. Elon went on a pivotal 7-2 run from that point to push ahead for good.
OTHER NOTES, STATS & FACTS:
Elon remains undefeated against the Lady Eagles since NCCU joined the DI ranks (2007).
