PREVIEW: #NCCUVB at Gardner-Webb Tuesday


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team will play its second straight non-conference road match when the Lady Eagles visit Gardner-Webb University to conclude a home-and-away season series in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
 
Fans can listen to the match on the NCCU Sports Network as broadcaster Mike Wood will be on air with the play-by-play. Gardner-Webb sports information will provide video and live stats. The Lady Eagles will be looking to end a three-match losing streak. NCCU (3-11 Overall) is coming off a 3-0 road loss at Winthrop University last Wednesday.
 
A trio of Lady Eagles average over two points per set. Senior outside hitter Casey Curran leads the way with 2.65 points per set, which includes a team-high 2.41 kills per set. Sophomore middle blocker Whitney White adds 2.24 points per set, featuring 1.82 kills and 0.59 blocks per set. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Murphy chips in 2.09 points per set with most of her points coming on an average of 1.85 kills per set. Sophomore Jazmine Daye follows closely with 1.79 points per set on 1.36 kills and a team-high 0.69 blocks per set.
 
The maroon and gray continue to use the same specialist with junior setter Paige Phillips netting 6.86 assists per set and sophomore libero Bree Simmons tallying 3.45 digs per set. Simmons also leads the squad in aces for a second straight year with 11 (0.25 aces/set).
 
NCCU is 0-6 against Gardner-Webb in its DI era (since 2007), including a straight-set setback in Durham on Sept. 27 by a score of 25-10, 25-23, 25-12. Curran led the Lady Eagles with nine kills and 12 digs, while Phillips notched 13 assists, eight digs and two aces.
 
Gardner-Webb Volleyball
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs have lost six consecutive matches since beating NCCU three weeks ago. Gardner-Webb (10-12 Overall) is just 1-7 in the Big South Conference, but does boast a 9-5 mark in non-conference matches.
 
Redshirt freshman libero Emma Milstead has highlighted play for the Runnin' Bulldogs this season, ranking 24th in NCAA Division I and leading the Big South with 5.07 digs per set.
 
Senior Taylor Lillard (2.61) paces the Runnin' Bulldogs with 2.61 kills per set. Lillard also provides 2.76 digs per set for a top-50 program in digs per set.
 
GWU has four other players averaging over two points per set in sophomore Keira Moore (1.93 kills, 0.56 blocks), junior Kaelyn Dyson (1.61 kills, 1.01 blocks), junior Hannah Driscoll (1.57 kills, 0.81 blocks) and junior Nicole Celarek (1.77 kills).
 
Sophomore setter Amanda Sahm leads the Runnin' Bulldogs with 5.27 assists and 0.37 aces per set. GWU has been using a two-setter system with classmate Tinsley Fain adding 4.31 assists per set.
 
Gardner-Webb hit .233 in its win against the Lady Eagles. Sahm posted a double-double with 16 assists and 13 digs. Lillard led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 11 kills and Driscoll recorded eight kills and five block assists.
