DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team steps away from conference play for its next two matches and will first conclude a home-and-away season series at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The NCCU Lady Eagles are coming off a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home losses to Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman University last weekend. NCCU (3-10 Overall) has picked up all three of its wins on the road.

The maroon and gray continue to use the same specialist with junior setter

Daye (0.72 blocks/set) and White (0.63) lead NCCU in blocking with 28 and 26 total blocks, respectively. Murphy (2.08 digs/set), Phillips (1.98) and Curran (1.98) are all hovering around two digs per set. Simmons leads the squad in aces for a second straight year with 11 (0.27 aces/set).
NCCU is 0-7 against Winthrop in the programs DI era (since 2007), including a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) home loss last month. Curran and Murphy led NCCU with nine kills apiece and Simmons chipped in 12 digs and two aces.
Winthrop Volleyball
The Winthrop Eagles have lost four straight matches – all in the Big South Conference – since beating NCCU on Sept. 23. Winthrop (8-12 Overall) is 2-3 at home.
Winthrop has a balanced attack with five other players averaging over two points or more per set, including senior Brianna Gray (2.87 points, 2.32 kills, 0.85 blocks), junior Keaupono Fey (2.86 points, 2.65 kills), freshman Sydney Gunter (2.49 points, 2.23 kills, 0.49 blocks), freshman Sammi-Jo Ah-Hong (2.13 points, 1.93 kills) and senior Emma Weakland (2.09 points, 1.84 kills, 0.49 blocks).
Freshman setter Siani Yamaguchi orchestrates the Eagles offense that is hitting .189 on the season with 7.35 assists per set. Sophomore Carlie Skelton tops Winthrop on the back row with 3.76 digs per set. Junior defender Mallary McFadden ranks 37th nationally with 0.42 aces per set, while adding 2.39 digs per set.
Winthrop hit .405 in its straight-set win over NCCU just 19 days ago. Gray and Gunter led the visiting Eagles with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Yamaguchi totaled 34 assists.
