NCCU Athletics Announces Staff Additions

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University Department of Athletics welcomed four new staff members during the fall semester.
 
Joining the NCCU Athletics staff were Ed Reid as academic counselor, Paul Cox as compliance coordinator, Derrick Magee as associate athletics director for finance and George Midgett as coordinator of the Preparing to Soar Program (PSP).
 
 
Ed Reid – Academic Counselor
Ed H. Reid joined the NCCU Athletics staff as an Academic Counselor in August 2015. Prior to NCCU, Reid held the same position at North Carolina A&T State University for two years (2013-15). A 1995 graduate of North Carolina State University with a bachelor of arts degree in history, Reid worked at his alma mater for 22 years (1991-2013) as an Assistant Director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes.
 
Paul Cox – Compliance Coordinator
Paul Cox was hired as Compliance Coordinator for the NCCU Department of Athletics in September 2015. Prior to NCCU, Cox served as the Interim Director of Compliance (2014-15) at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. While at Coppin State, he also performed an internship (2013-14) in the compliance office. Cox is a 2011 graduate of North Carolina State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Agricultural Management.  Cox graduated from University of Baltimore School of Law with his Juris Doctor in 2014, where he was the Vice President of the Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Club.  He is currently working towards his M.B.A. at the University of Baltimore School of Business.
 
Derrick Magee – Associate Athletics Director for Finance
Derrick Magee joined the NCCU staff in October of 2015 as Associate Athletics Director for Finance. Prior to NCCU, Magee was the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business Affairs (2011-2014) and Director of Auxiliary Enterprises (2014-15) at Alabama State University. In his role with the ASU Athletics Department, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for the Hornets and also oversaw the day-to-day operations of the department, including business services, facility operations, and serves as the direct liaison to human resources, legal affairs, ticket operations and marketing/development. Magee assisted in the development of more than $80 million in new athletics facilities at ASU and the creation of the ASU Athletics Business Office. Magee served as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator for the university, was a member of the Executive Vice President/COO and Vice President/Business & Finance management teams, and had sport supervision of football, women's basketball, baseball and the men's and women's track & field/cross country programs. Before Alabama State University, Magee served as the Associate Athletics Director and Chief Business Officer (2008-10) at the University of Cincinnati. While at Cincinnati, Magee managed a $40 million operating budget and $120 million in debt service for the Bearcat Athletics Department. He also served as Assistant Athletics Director for Internal Operations and Director of Finance (2005-08) at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where he managed all internal operations of the department and supervised the sports of men's and women's water polo and swimming & diving. Magee is a graduate of Florida A&M University, where he was a four-year letterwinner in basketball, serving as team captain in 1998-99 and leading the Rattlers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance against Duke. After completing his undergraduate degree from FAMU in physical education/sport & leisure management, he then earned his MBA and Administrative Services Credential from California State University, Stanislaus in 2005 and 2006. Magee completed the NCAA's Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females in 2009, the prestigious Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute (SMI) in 2011 and participated in the D-1A institute in the summer of 2013. He is a former Executive Committee member and Vice President of the Collegiate Athletic Business Managers Association (CABMA), and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Minority Opportunity Athletic Association (MOAA). Magee is a member of Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity and Kappa Alpha Psi, Incorporated.
 
George Midgett - Coordinator of the Preparing to Soar Program (PSP)
George Midgett started at NCCU in October 2015 as Coordinator of the Preparing to Soar Program (PSP), a summer bridge program designed to assist first-year student-athletes with transitioning to the college environment. Before joining the NCCU Athletics staff, Midgett worked at Vanderbilt University for 11 years, including the last three years as the Assistant Director of Compliance and Director of ELITE Program (Educating Leaders in Tomorrow's Endeavors). He began at Vanderbilt as Compliance Coordinator in October 2004. A Chicago native, Midgett received his bachelor's degree in 2002 from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating with honors and lettering four season with the baseball program.  He went on to earn a master's degree in sport administration at Belmont University in 2005. Midgett is a 2009-10 graduate of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females.
