HARRISONBURG, Va. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team had no answer for a hot-hitting Georgetown University attack in a 3-0 non-conference loss at the James Madison University Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Hoyas (5-6 Overall) hit .389 en route to the 25-22, 25-13, 25-7 triumph. The Lady Eagles (0-14) were held to a season-low 20 kills in the match while Georgetown's team hitting percentage was the highest mark allowed by NCCU's defense this season.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:Senior
Kelly Rossip tallied a team-high 8.5 points with five kills, three aces and one block assist.
Junior
Kelsey Murphy led the Lady Eagles with six kills, marking the 12th time in 14 matches Murphy has paced NCCU in kills. Freshman
Sydney Sumner chipped in four kills and a team-best seven digs. Junior
Casey Curran supplied 16 assists.
GEORGETOWN HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:Freshman Alyssa Sinnette totaled a match-high 15 kills as the Hoyas pounded down 45 kills in the three sets. Junior Ashlie Williams tallied seven kills, two solo blocks, four block assists and one ace for 12 points.
Freshman Paige McKnight orchestrated the sizzling Georgetown attack with 32 assists.
SET-BY-SET:1ST: The two teams battled closely for the first half of the set with NCCU leading as late as 7-5 and only trailing by one, 14-13, after an ace by Rossip. Georgetown clung to a narrow advantage for the rest of the frame. A freshman
Tamika Brekke ace followed by a Sumner block closed the Lady Eagles deficit to three (22-19) to make things interesting late but a Sinnette kill on the Hoyas' second chance at set point ended the opening period in favor of Georgetown.
2ND: NCCU picked up the first point of the middle set on a Georgetown blocking error but the Hoyas rattled off the next eight points to take control early. Georgetown led by double digits from 18-8 to the conclusion of the 12-point set victory.
3RD: The Hoyas kept the momentum, racing out to a 4-nil cushion and never trailing in the final frame. NCCU was held to just two kills in the set as the Lady Eagles suffered their most lopsided set loss of the season by 18.
OTHER NOTES, STATS & FACTS: Georgetown moved to 2-0 against the Lady Eagles in NCCU's NCAA Division I era (since 2007).
