IRONDALE, Ala. – Senior
Tiphani Jackson hustled around the diamond on a four-base error to score the walk-off run for the North Carolina Central University softball team to cap a perfect 2-0 Sunday for the Lady Eagles in the Tiny Laster Invitational at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex near Birmingham.
NCCU started the day with a quick 2-0 win over Grambling State University and then rallied for a dramatic 8-7 conquest over Mississippi Valley State University.
"Finishing games has always been challenge for us over the past several years and the ladies made it a priority this weekend," said NCCU fourth year head coach
Theresa Stephens. "I am proud of the ladies for coming through against adversity."
NCCU departs Alabama going 3-1 in the event to even its record at 5-5. The Lady Eagles will carry a three-game win streak into its first home doubleheader of the season. After several cancellations and postponed games due to inclement weather, NCCU will host Norfolk State University on Tuesday, March 10 with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
Junior right fielder
Casey Hargett led the Lady Eagles offensively with four hits and four runs from the leadoff position. Senior catcher
Emerie Germ and junior designated hitter
Demiree Briones all added three hits. Germ had a team-high three RBI.
Germ and Hargett both extended their current hit streaks to 10 and eight games, respectively.
Junior
London Booker was credited with the win in both contests to improve her record to 4-2. Booker tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener and then pitched the top of the seventh inning of the second game just before NCCU rallied back.
Booker, who just pitched a three-hit complete game against Jackson State on Saturday, continued her dominance by holding Grambling State to just two base hits over seven innings of scoreless work while striking out six Tigers. The Richmond, Va., native retired 13 consecutive batters she faced for the Lady Eagles first shutout of 2015.
NCCU was anxious to score against a winless Grambling State (0-13) but it resulted in 10 fly outs over the first five unsuccessful innings. However, Germ broke the scoreless affair with an RBI-triple to deep right in the sixth that scored Hargett. Germ, who had two of Lady Eagles' six hits, trotted home moments later on a single off the bat of sophomore Dominque Wilson to double up the final score.
Against MVSU (4-14), N.C. Central was able to construct a 4-2 advantage after five innings highlighted by a two-run single by Batie in the fourth. Hargett ripped a double off the base of the left field fence in the first and the cracked another deep double to center in the fifth and eventual scored both times on base hits by Germ and junior
De'Onna Smith.
The Lady Eagles played 12 consecutive innings of errorless softball on the day before three mistakes in the sixth inning allowed the Devilettes to score four unearned runs and take a 6-4 lead.
NCCU knotted the score with a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth. Freshman
Fallon Roberson led off with a pinch-hit single and scored on Hargett's third straight hit. Hargett scored the tying run on an RBI-groundout by Germ.
A pair of singles put MVSU back in front by one in the top of the seventh setting up the wild finish for the Lady Eagles. Briones drew a one-out walk before being substituted out for junior pinch runner
Angelique Perricelli at first. Jackson then came up to bat and hit a grounder to the third baseman, who made a hard but accurate throw over to first base. However, the second baseman covering the base was unable to squeeze the throw allowing the ball to dart all the way to the outfield fence in foul territory. Perrricelli scored easily on the error and was followed by Jackson, who completed the loop around the bases swiftly and slid across home plate just before the relay throw reached the catcher.
