LADY EAGLES SPLIT OPENING GAMES AT TINY LASTER INVITE

NCCU knocks off Jackson State after falling to Alabama A&M

IRONDALE, Ala. – Junior London Booker tossed a three-hit complete game and sophomore Brianna Hampton provided the offensive support with a two-run single to lead the North Carolina Central University softball team to a 3-1 win over Jackson State University in Saturday's second game of the Tiny Laster Invitational at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex.

The Lady Eagles held a one-run run lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning of their opening game against Alabama A&M University but a pair of costly errors allowed the Lady Bulldogs to score two unearned runs for the walk-off 4-3 victory.

NCCU (3-5 overall) can level its overall record with wins on the final day of the Tiny Laster Invitational against Grambling State University (9 AM CST/10 AM EST) and Mississippi Valley State University (11:15 AM CST/10:15 AM EST) Sunday.

Booker was one out away from a shutout against Jackson State (6-16) when junior Sarah Gore ripped a double in the right field gap that scored the Lady Tigers leadoff hitter. Gore got greedy and tried to turn the double into a triple with the potential tying run coming up to the plate but a great relay play by the Lady Eagles ended the contest. NCCU junior centerfielder Angelique Perricelli tracked down the Gore hit near the outfield fence and quickly connected with sophomore Jenny Tracy for the cutoff and Tracy immediately tossed a laser to third where senior Martha Batie was able to tag Gore out.

Booker (2-2) picked up her second win of the season going the distance with eight strikeouts. JSU ended a no-hit bid by Booker with a one-out bunt in the fourth. The right-handed hurler fanned six consecutive Lady Tigers during one stretch early in the contest.

NCCU got on the board in the second when junior Markell Wylie scored on an illegal pitch delivered by JSU sophomore Sybil Lozano. Hampton then tacked on the all-important insurance runs in the fifth. Perricelli drew a leadoff walk and senior Emerie Germ followed with a single before they both scored on Hampton's two-RBI single through the middle of the infield into center.

Germ had a late single in both games to extend her hit streak to eight games while senior Martha Batie led the Lady Eagles going 2 for 2 with two singles and a sacrifice bunt.
NCCU grabbed a one-run advantage three times in the opener against Alabama A&M (8-7) but the Lady Bulldogs answered in the home half all three times before scoring the game-winning run on a dropped popup to first.

Junior Casey Hargett gave the Lady Eagles the initial 1-0 lead with her second home run of the campaign – a solo shot to straightaway center – in the third; Tracy put NCCU back in front, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly in the sixth; and junior transfer Demiree Briones drilled a towered homer to left-center for her first dinger in a Maroon and Gray uniform that put the designated visitors ahead for the final time, 3-2, in the seventh.

Sophomore Dominique Wilson hurled a complete-game for the Lady Eagles but was tagged with the loss because of four NCCU errors. Only one of four runs allowed by Wilson (1-3) was earned. Wilson registered eight K's.

The Lady Eagles outhit AAMU, 7-5.
