(written by Genesis Jackson, sports information student intern)DURHAM N.C. – North Carolina Central University women's basketball team outscored the Bethune-Cookman University Lady Wildcats in the second half, but it was not enough to come away with a victory, falling 50-33 on Saturday, Feb. 28 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
Junior
Tisha Dixon led the Lady Eagles with eight points, while senior
Racquel Davis and senior
Nikki Works took control of the glass with seven rebounds each. Works also had five points as the team's second-leading scorer.
Bethune-Cookman obtained the first 16 points of the contest until a jumper from
Morgan Jones put the Lady Eagles in operation with 15:22 on the clock.
The Lady Wildcats' lead expanded as the time coiled down in the first half. Bethune-Cookman's Jasmine Knowles controlled the majority of the Lady Wildcats' first-period scoring with 10 points, sending NCCU into the locker room trailing 34-10.
Early in the second half, the Lady Eagles fell to a 13-0 run by the Lady Wildcats, leaving NCCU behind 38-10 with nearly 18 minutes remaining.
Although NCCU managed to outscore the Lady Wildcats by seven points in the last half and posted 15 unanswered points in the last eight minutes, Bethune-Cookman maintained control during the competition.
Kendra Cooper finished with a game-high 15 points for Bethune-Cookman (12-14, 9-5 MEAC).
The Lady Eagles will play at Savannah State on Monday, Mar. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
