WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior
Zoe Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) won the women's triple jump to top 11 Eagles and Lady Eagles to post top-five finishes at the JDL College Kickoff Classic on Saturday, Dec. 5 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Ellis leaped 11.81 meters (39'-9") to beat out Dejah Hayes of Charlotte (11.50m) and Imani McGhee of North Carolina (11.46m) in the triple jump. Ellis also placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.42 meters (17'-9.5").
NCCU freshman
Bethany White (Gaithersburg, Md.) had a standout performance by placing second in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.57 seconds, which currently ranks 17th in the nation this season.
Other top-five efforts by the Lady Eagles came from
Sherhae Holloway (3rd, 1.60m) in the high jump, while
Kiana Seabrook (58.65) and
Jaleesa Smoot (58.84) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 400m run.
Junior
Deandre James posted the top individual finish for the Eagles by placing second in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.66. Senior
Kevin Vincent (Cary, N.C.) crossed the finish line fourth in the 400m run with a time of 50.98 seconds, while freshman
Mykol Branch placed fifth in the high jump (1.95m).
Both of NCCU's relay squads finished in the top five of the men's 4x400m relay. The 'A' group, consisting of Vincent,
Ronnie Lovick, James and
Carlton Edwards, Jr., were the runners-up with a time of 3:26.63, while the 'B' team of
Victor Dunbar,
Deontae Williams,
Dominick Lemonious and
James Johnson placed fifth in 3:27.95.
The NCCU men's and women's indoor track and field teams return to action after the holiday break on Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
