NCCU Volleyball Visits Campbell Tuesday


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team will begin a four-match road swing with a non-conference contest at Campbell University on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
 
The NCCU Sports Network will provide an audio broadcast of the match and Campbell sports information is providing live stats for those not in attendance.

SERIES: Campbell controls the all-time NCAA Division I era series against NCCU at 1-12. The Camels have won the last 11 encounters, including a 3-0 triumph in the two programs last meeting to begin the 2014 season.

The Lady Eagles have lost their last three matching, including NCCU's only match last week against Gardner-Webb University on Wednesday in straight sets. NCCU (3-19 Overall) is 0-7 in true road games.
 
Junior outside hitter Kelsey Murphy had a team-high 11 kills against the Runnin' Bulldogs to maintain her perch atop the MEAC with 3.56 kills per set. Murphy is second on the team with 11 aces and ranks third with 2.14 digs per set.
 
Senior Kelly Rossip is NCCU's top blocker with 0.65 blocks per set. Rossi is a strong contributor on the attack as well by averaging 2.31 kills per set with a .227 hitting percentage.
 
A trio of freshmen also average over one kill per set. Whitney White returned to the lineup after missing six matches last week and she is supplying 2.00 kills and 2.08 digs per set. Kierra Shipman and Whitney White follow with 1.41 and 1.09 kills per set, respectively.
 
Defensively, freshman Tamika Brekke (3.46 digs/set) and senior Marilyn Sherbondy (2.60 digs/set) top the NCCU's passers in total digs.
 
Junior setter Casey Curran tallies 7.48 assists per set and 1.61 digs per set; freshman Bree Simmons serves up a team-best 0.33 aces per set to go along with 1.07 digs per set; and sophomore Paige Phillips contributes 2.78 assists per set and 1.89 digs per set.
 
In last year's tilt against Campbell, Murphy led all players with nine kills.
 
Campbell University Volleyball
 
The Camels have posted three consecutive Southern Conference wins against Charleston Southern (3-1), Presbyterian (3-0) and Winthrop (3-2). Campbell (8-12 Overall) is 3-4 at home.
 
Senior libero Mary Crema is a First Team All-SoCon performer last season and currently ranks 104th in DI with 4.40 digs per set in the final campaign. Crema had 15 digs against NCCU in 2014.
 
Senior Katelyn Layden (2.15 kps, .118 hitting percentage) and freshman Rachel Harty (2.09, .133) both have 146 kills on the season to pace the Camels.
 
Junior Jenny Tate adds 1.78 kills per set and a team-best 0.87 blocks per set. Sophomore McKenzie Fell matches Tate with 1.78 kills per set, while also supporting Campbell's front row defense with 0.65 blocks per set.
 
The Camels rank 38th out of 329 DI programs with 1.59 aces per set. Layden and Crema top the Camels servers with 0.38 and 0.36 aces per set, correspondingly.
 
Junior Rebecca Ramirez has been Campbell's top setter with 5.88 assists per set and is helped by Summer Schuitema and her 4.23 assists per set.
 
Campbell hit .151 and held NCCU to a .043 attack in last year's 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 triumph.
