NCCU VOLLEYBALL DROPS SEASON-FIRST ROAD MATCH AT RADFORD

Brown Leads Eagle Offense with Eight Kills

Box Score RADFORD Va. – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-16) sweep to the Radford Highlanders during the Eagles first road contest of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 2 in Radford, Va., at the Dedmon Center.

Senior outside hitter Da'sha Brown (Gaston, N.C.) led NCCU offensively contributing eight kills while sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and senior Ashley McCarthy (Elmont, N.Y.) added four a piece.

As the Eagles started the match on the service side, NCCU scored two quick points off of a Radford error and a Gabrielle Leclerc (Narragansett, R.I.) service ace. A back-and-forth battle took place for the next few points before the Highlanders pulled away with the set, taking the 25-14 victory.

Set two began in similar fashion, as the Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead. NCCU's offensive struggles continued to plague the team through the match as they only tallied 11 set points falling behind 2-0 in the match.

Finding themselves down 11 early during set three, momentum picked up after an Eagles timeout, as NCCU pushed a 7-4 run before Radford captured the 25-16 victory.

Rookie Lauryn Martin (Round Rock, Texas) and junior Melissa Rabell Pineiro (Canavanas, Puerto Rico) led the Eagles defensively collecting nine and eight digs respectively while freshman setter Paige Phillips (Birmingham, Ala.) directed the NCCU offense with 15 assists.

The Eagles return to action on Friday, Sept. 5, as they continue a five-game road swing. NCCU opens action at the Wake Forest Deacon Invitational squaring off with Presbyterian at 1 p.m., followed by a match against Wake Forest at 3 p.m., at the Reynolds Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C.
