NCCU SOFTBALL POST SEASON CHANCES SPOILED BY AGGIES

Smith Knocks in Game-One Winning Solo Homer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team saw its 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference postseason chances come to an end as the Lady Eagles (9-34, 4-9 MEAC) split doubleheader action with the rival North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies (15-26, 7-7) on Saturday, May 3 in Greensboro, N.C., at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.

The Lady Eagles kept tournament hopes alive after they seized the game one 6-5 victory in the eighth inning while NCA&T clinched the fourth and final spot from the MEAC southern division as they pulled off the 4-3 win during game two.

In game one, the Aggies scored first in the second inning with Sabrina Edmonds' led-off solo homer to left field on the first pitch.

NCCU countered in the third inning and scored its first run with a RBI single from sophomore Angelique Perricelli (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) that scored junior Martha Batie (Harrisburg, Pa.). With the score knotted at one, NCCU took the 5-1 lead after Dominque Wilson (Mooresville, N.C.) hit a grand slam over the left center field fence with one out.

The Aggies scored three runs in the bottom of the third as Dasia Moore led off the inning with a double to left field. Alejandra Barcenas drew a walk and Zebresha Blakeney loaded the bases with a bunt single. Edmonds reached on an error by Batie who was in center field which allowed a pair of runs to score. The Aggies brought the game within one with Jax Kaye Woodard's RBI single to left field that drove in Blakeney.

A&T tied the game at five in the fourth as the Eagles walked Edmonds with bases loaded. 

For the next three innings, neither team was able to score forcing the game into extra innings. 

The Lady Eagles capitalized in the top of the eighth and scored the game-winning run with a solo homer from sophomore De'Onna Smith (McLeansville, N.C.) as she knocked in her sixth of the season in her hometown.

Sophomore London Booker (Richmond, Va.) tossed a complete game for the win and recorded 11 strikeouts.

During game two the Lady Eagles unloaded three runs in the first inning taking the early 3-0 lead after junior Emerie Germ (Canton, Ga.) singled with two outs. Wilson followed with a singled to left field advancing Germ to second.

Senior Camille Hampton (Lakewood, Calif.) scored Germ from second with a single to center field as Wilson moved into scoring position at second followed by an RBI single from Smith, scoring Wilson.

Hampton scored from second after redshirt rookie Jenny Tracy (Le Grande, Ore.) reached on an error by NCA&T's left fielder giving NCCU the 3-0 lead.

The Lady Aggies scored for the first time during the fourth inning after tying the score with NCCU at three.

A&T came back in the fifth inning and took the 4-3 lead with Edmonds' RBI single to left field that scored Barcenas.

The Lady Eagles and Aggies wrap up the three-game series Sunday, May 4 at noon in Greensboro.
