Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, VA. – The North Carolina Central University softball team split doubleheader action with the Liberty Flames (4-24) as the Eagles (4-19) captured the game one victory 4-0 before falling 7-5 during game two on Saturday, March 22 in Lynchburg, Va.
During game one both teams remained scoreless in the first inning.
Rookie
Dominque Wilson (Mooresville, N.C.) started off the second with a single to left field followed by sophomore De'Onna Smith (McLeansville, N.C.) reaching first on a throwing error by third base, advancing to second on the play, forcing Wilson to third.
Jenny Tracy (LaGrange, Ore.) hit into a double play, while Wilson was thrown out at the plate.
With two outs on the board, Smith stole third base before scoring on junior
Martha Batie's (Harrisburg, Pa.) hit to the pitcher.
With a three-up, three-down bottom of the second the Lady Eagles added to their lead in the top of the third after junior
Tiphani Jackson's (Bowie, Md.) bunt single turn into an unearned run after she scored on a throwing error by LU's pitcher.
Innings four and five remained scoreless between both teams before
Emerie Germ (Caton, Ga.) singled to center field to start the top of the sixth. Wilson popped up to short stop placing the first out on the board followed by Smith's third homer of the season, over the left field fence, scoring Germ.
The two run sixth inning pushed NCCU on top 4-0 to end the contest as neither team could convert in the seventh.
The Lady Eagles collected four runs on seven hits while giving up two errors during game on.
Sophomore
London Booker (Richmond, Va.) earned the win for NCCU. Booker (2-9) faced 29 batters in her seven innings pitched, gave up no runs, six hits, one walk and stuck out three.
Starting the second match-up with two runners on base Smith collected her second homer of the day scoring Wilson and Emerie Germ, putting NCCU on top 3-0.
The Flames answered in the bottom of the inning after they converted four hits and three NCCU errors into five runs.
In the bottom of the second and third LU furthered its lead scoring a run in each inning.
Trailing 7-3 the Lady Eagles had one more chance in the top of the seventh.
Senior
Camille Hampton (Lakewood, Calif.) singled to short stop to start the inning, after
Markell Wylie (Fayetteville, N.C.) replaced her on first senior
London Germ (Canton, Ga.) flew out to left field.
Sophomore
Angelique Perricelli (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) reached first on fields choice while Wylie was safe at second after the Flame's second baseman overthrew.
After a walk by Emerie Germ and a foul out to first by Wilson, Smith's 2-RBI single to center field scored Wylie and Perricelli.
The two runs were not enough to edge LU as the Lady Eagles fell short in the seventh, 7-5.
Booker (2-10) collected the NCCU shortcoming after pitching the first inning of the contest giving up four hits and five runs.
Wilson finished the game on the mound pitching five innings, allowing five hits, two runs, one walk and striking out three batters.
