NCCU SOFTBALL HITS HEAVY, TAKING TWO FROM UMES

Lady Eagles Combine for 26 hits during Season First’s Two Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team collected a pair of victories as the Lady Eagles (2-17) earned their first two wins of the season sweeping the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (3-19) during NCCU's home opener on Saturday, March 15 at Parkwood Athletic Field in Durham.

The Lady Eagles ended the first contest in six innings defeating UMES 10-2, while coming from behind, forcing extra innings during game two, as NCCU beat the Hawks 8-6 in the bottom of the 11th.

After a scoreless first inning during game one, UMES scored first in the top of the second leading the Lady Eagles 1-0.

NCCU answered in the bottom half of the second after sophomore Angelique Perricelli (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) laid down a bunt for a hit with two outs on the board. During rookie Brianna Hampton's (Lakewood, Calif.) at bat Perricelli stole second while Hampton reached first after being hit by a pitch.

Junior Martha Batie (Harrisburg, Pa.) also earned a spot on first base after being hit by a pitch before senior Camille Hampton (Lakewood, Calif.) pinch hit in the nine spot knocking in Perricelli and Brianna Hampton with a single to left center.

Markell Wylie (Fayetteville, N.C.) replaced Camille Hampton on first as senior London Germ (Canton, Ga.) scored Batie from third of off a single to left field.

After a UMES pitching change Jenny Tracy (LaGrange, Ore.) walked as London Germ advanced to third and Wylie scored.

Emerie Germ's (Canton, Ga.)  single to left center scored her sister followed by rookie Dominique Wilson's (Mooresville, N.C.) ground-rule double scoring Tracy, putting the Lady Eagles on top 6-1 after two complete innings.

While holding the Hawks scoreless during the third and fourth, NCCU added three more runs to its lead.

Avoiding ending the game in five innings UMES scored a run during the top of the fifth to cut the Lady Eagles advantage to seven.

Although NCCU was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning sophomore De'Onna Smith (McLeansville, N.C.) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo homer over the left field line fence as the Lady Eagles took game one 10-2 in six.

Wilson (1-7) earned the Lady Eagles first win of the season giving up two runs, walking four batters and striking out four during the victory.

During game two, UMES took a 4-0 lead over NCCU entering the bottom of the fifth inning.
After London Germ's single to second base Tracy earned her second home run of the season with a 2-RBI shot over the center field fence.

With two outs, Smith knocked out her second homer of the day with a solo shot to right center, cutting the Hawks lead to one.

In the bottom of the six the Lady Eagles tied the contest after a double down the left field line from London Germ scored Batie, knotting the score at four.

As the seventh inning remained scoreless between both teams, entering extra innings eight and nine neither team could pull ahead.

In the top of the 10th UMES scored, while NCCU matched their one run tying the score at five.

After the Hawks added another run to the board in the top of the 11th, NCCU tied the score yet again when Wylie scored off of a Tracy single to left field.

With two outs and Tracy on second, Wilson cleared the left field fence with a two-run homer, pushing the Lady Eagles to their 8-6 victory.

Sophomore London Booker (Richmond, Va.) took home win-two of the day for NCCU. Booker (1-9) pitched all 11 innings for the Lady Eagles giving up six runs, three which were earned while striking out 11 batters and walking none.

NCCU returns to the field Sunday, March 16 as they look to sweep the series over UMES at 10 a.m., at Parkwood Athletic Field.
