Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – A third and fourth inning rally from the North Carolina Central University softball team helped the Lady Eagles (3-17) battle back from a 3-0 disadvantage as they swept the three-game series over the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks earning a 4-3 game-three win on Sunday, March 16 at Parkwood Athletic Field in Durham.
The Hawks struck first during opening inning of the contest earning two runs on three hits in the first.
With the Lady Eagles unable to get through their entire lineup after two complete, UMES added a third run to the board leading NCCU 3-0 in the top of the inning.
After a groundout in the bottom of the third, sophomore
Markell Wylie (Fayetteville, N.C.) doubled to left center followed by a single for a bunt to third base from senior
London Germ (Canton, Ga.) to put runners on first and third.
With two outs on the board junior
Emerie Germ (Canton, Ga.) singled up the middle scoring Wylie and London Germ cutting the UMES advantage to one.
During the top of the fourth, rookie pitcher
Dominque Wilson (Mooresville, N.C.) held down the field for the Lady Eagles making a play to first off of a UMES bunt, followed by adding two backwards K's to the book to end the three-up, three-down inning.
With sophomore
Amber Kirkland (Raleigh, N.C.) reaching first after being hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Wylie earned her second hit of the contest with a single up the middle, scoring Kirkland and advancing to third on the throw.
London Germ gave NCCU the go-ahead run after her single up the middle scored Wylie from third giving the Lady Eagles the 4-3 lead after four complete.
The Hawks threatened during the top of the sixth inning after two singles to left field put a runner in scoring position for UMES with two outs.
Wilson battled back adding another strike out to her stat line as the Hawks left two stranded.
During the third-game victory NCCU's London Germ and Wylie combined for five of the Lady Eagles eight hits and accounted for three of their four runs.
Wilson (2-7) earned the NCCU victory pitching the complete seven innings while giving up eight hits and only two earned runs while walking two batters and striking out six.
NCCU returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 as the Lady Eagles travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference northern division foe Norfolk State in doubleheader action beginning at 4 p.m.
