COLUMBIA, S.C.- The South Carolina Gamecocks proved why they are the nation's No. 1/2 women's basketball team to beat after handing the North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles a 64-point defeat (90-24) on Monday, Dec. 1 in Columbia, South Carolina.
Sophomore
Morgan Jones (Stockbridge, Georgia) broke the Lady Eagles scoring silence at the 17:55 mark in the first half as NCCU trailed 7-3 early.
The Lady Eagles would only add 13 more points to the board in the first half as the Gamecocks led 39-16 heading into intermission.
NCCU continued to struggle offensively during the second 20, as South Carolina forced 16 Lady Eagle turnovers and NCCU was only able to knock down four shots and two free throws, totaling 10 second half points.
The Gamecocks converted 28 Lady Eagle turnovers into 31 points during the match-up and dominated in the paint pouring in 58 points compared to NCCU's 12, as South Carolina stayed undefeated on the year with the 90-26 victory.
Jones led the Lady Eagles with seven points and three boards while redshirt senior
Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, New York) trailed the NCCU effort with six points and four rebounds.
Five Gamecocks finished in double-figures led by freshmen standout A'ja Wilson's 16 points.
The Lady Eagles open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 6 as NCCU travels to Princess Anne, Maryland, to battle the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks at 2 p.m.
