BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team dropped its second-straight contest as the Lady Eagles fell by 20 to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 73-53, on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
Senior
Racquel Davis led the Eagles (1-2) for the first time this season with 19 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 from the line. The Brooklyn New York, native also led NCCU on the boards with nine rebounds despite her early foul trouble.
The Eagles opened the contest with a senior
Khyra Conerly (Oakland, California) layup from fellow senior and California native,
Rachel Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, California).
Two would be the largest NCCU lead of the contest as the Eagles saw it twice in the first half.
G-WU took a 37-20 lead into the locker room led by rookie Aunesha Williams 13 points off the bench.
At the 13:13 mark in the second half the Runnin' Bulldogs pulled away by as many as 29, before a late 12-0 run from the Eagles cut the Gardner-Webb advantage back to 15 with 2:51 to play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs answered in the final minutes of play with a 7-2 swing of their own, earning the 73-53 victory over NCCU.
G-WU finished with 37 points from the bench led by Williams' 18.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25 as NCCU opens its home campaign against the Winthrop Eagles at 6 p.m.
