EAGLES SUFFER 65-60 SETBACK IN BACK IN BUIES CREEK

Sophomore Duo Earn Career-Best Scoring

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 on the season as the Lady Eagles suffered a 65-60 setback to the Campbell University Camels on Monday, Nov. 17 in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

Sophomore duo Morgan Jones (Stockbrdige, Georgia) and Tia Clement (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) earned career-best scoring performances as Jones tied her 14 points scored on Friday, and Clement put up a career-high 10 points, shooting 3-for-5 from behind the arc.

After a quick Campbell three opened the contest, the Eagles answered as senior Rachel Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, California) connected with Jones on the wing, and a friendly bounce knotted the score at three.

As early foul trouble plagued NCCU down low in the first half, the Camels were able to pull away with their largest lead of the half at the 4:23 mark when Raechaun Edwards knocked down a two putting Campbell on top, 31-18.

The Camels continued to control the tempo, taking a 37-25 lead into the break.

A 4-2 NCCU advantage opened the second half, before Williams connected with Clement behind the arc on back-to-back trips down the floor, pushing the Eagles run to 10-2 heading into the media timeout.

Out of the break, with the Camels up four, Jones dished to senior Nikki Works (Syracuse, New York) who knocked down a three ball cutting the Campbell lead to one.
Williams picked the Camels Kiera Gains, finding Jones who connected with Works for the Eagles fourth-straight triple, giving NCCU its first lead at 41-39, after a 16-2 second half run.

NCCU would see a four-point lead with 9:07 left in regulation after a third three-pointer from Works before both teams remained scoreless for nearly two minutes and Campbell's Gaines broke the silence at the 5:52 mark pushing the Camel's back on top by two.

With Campbell up seven after a made basket at the 21 second mark, a desperation three-ball form Jones cut the deficit to four, making the contest a two possession ball game.

A free throw from the Camels pushed the lead back to five with 13 seconds left to play as Campbell escaped a 65-60 victory over NCCU.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22 when NCCU travels to Gardner-Webb to face the Runnin' Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, at 3 p.m.
