Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – After jumping out on a 10-0 run in the first two minutes of the contest, the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team dropped a back-and-forth battle, 54-53, to the Bluefield State Lady Blues on Thursday, Jan. 2 inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
After scoring the first 10 points, the Lady Eagles (5-6) were held scoreless for the next four minutes of the first half, allowing Bluefield State to go on a 10-0 run of its own, tying the game for the first time at the 14:45 mark.
For the remainder of the first twenty minute frame, the game saw an additional four ties and five lead changes as the Lady Blues took a 24-22 lead into the half.
NCCU could not regain momentum in the second half, only going ahead by as many as three in the closing five minutes of action.
With 11 seconds left on the game clock the Lady Eagles, down by one, forced a Bluefield State turnover under their basket but were unable to convert, giving up the one-point victory to the Lady Blues.
Junior
Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the game with 17 points shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 7-for-11 from the charity stripe, while junior
Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) led the contest with eight boards.
As a team, the Lady Eagles shot 17-for-48 from the field (35.4%), 18-for-27 from the free throw line (66.7%) and 1-for-6 from behind the arc (16.7%) while collecting 33 rebounds, seven assists, nine steals and one block.
Next up, NCCU travels to Norfolk, Va., on Sunday, Jan. 5 where they take on Old Dominion in a 2 p.m. tipoff.
