DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University wrapped up the 2013 NCCU Volleyball Invitational during opening weekend dropping a pair inside McDougald-McLendon Gym on Saturday, Aug. 31 while senior Kalin Russell and junior Da'Sha Brown earned sports on the NCCU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Falling to 3-0 on the season, the Eagles suffered a loss to the University of Evansville 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-16) before closing out the evening with a 3-0 defeat to Murray State University 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-13).
Russell recorded 16 kills, nine digs and three blocks in the two contests to lead NCCU, while Brown added an additional 15 kills over the two games and freshmen Kelsey Murphy earned 15 digs.
Junior setter Alice Genna directed the offense by distributing 27 assists on the day including a game-high 14 assists, seven digs and three blocks during game two against Murray State, while junior Ashley McCarty led the day with four blocks.
NCCU returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Asheville, N.C., to take on the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
