TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The North Carolina Central University softball team seized the final match-up of the three-game series between the Lady Eagles and the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers, 6-4 on Sunday, April 21 in Tallahassee, Fla., at the Messer Softball Complex after dropping the first two contests 8-1 and 8-2 on Saturday, April 20.
Game three’s 6-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory marked the first time the Lady Eagles have defeated FAMU since their transition to a Division I program in 2007.
NCCU struck first as the Lady Eagles leadoff batter,
Nadia Jefferies, reached first base on a single to second base.
Jefferies advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a pop up to right field from
Emerie Germ and scored on a throwing error made by the Lady Rattlers right fielder.
After holding FAMU scoreless during the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Eagles continued to add runs to the board during the top of the second.
Rookie
Markell Wylie started off the inning with a triple over the right fielder followed by
London Germ's triple to right field, scoring Wylie and giving NCCU the 2-0 lead.
The Lady Rattlers answered in the bottom of the second inning as the Lady Eagles gave up two runs off of three NCCU errors tying the game at 2-2.
Inning three remained scoreless between both teams before the Lady Eagles made their last run of the contest during the top of the fourth.
Senior
Bianka Molina led off for NCCU and advanced to first after being hit by a pitch and was put in scoring position after a wild pitch.
Angelique Perricelli then walked followed by Jefferies reaching first on a throwing error by the FAMU catcher.
With the bases loaded #Mae’Risha Watts# hit a fielder’s choice to third base, with Molina out at the plate. Emerie Germ then earned a three RBI double to left center scoring Perricelli, Watts and Jefferies. After a pitching change for the Lady Rattlers,
Camille Hampton hit a double down the left field line, scoring Germ. The Lady Eagles added four runs to their lead, off of two hits, one FAMU error and left one on base.
The Lady Rattlers made one last effort during the bottom of the fourth innings scoring two more runs off of three hits, closing the gap to 6-4 before the Lady Eagles sealed the victory.
Rookie pitcher
London Booker (2-24) took home NCCU’s fourth victory of the season throwing all seven innings, giving up eight hits, four runs, two earned runs, no walks and two strike outs.
Errors plagued the Lady Eagles during the first two games of the series. In game one NCCU committed six errors making only two of the Lady Rattlers eight runs earned on Booker as they fell 8-1.
Emerie Germ scored the only run for NCCU during the first contest after she earned her first home run in Maroon and Gray hitting a solo homer over the left field fence.
Booker (1-24) took home the loss for the Lady Eagles after pitching five innings, allowing six hits, eight runs, two earned runs, four earned runs and six strike outs.
During game two NCCU suffered four more miscues on the field in the 8-2 loss.
The Lady Eagles plated their only two runs of the contest during the top of fifth inning after London Germ and Molina both reached base on singles.
Tiphani Jackson then earned a RBI single scoring Germ followed by Angelique Perricelli’s sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Molina.
Molina (1-12) earned the loss during game two pitching 5.2 innings, giving up eight hits, eight runs, seven earned runs, three walks and three strike outs.
The Lady Eagles return to the field on Tuesday, April 23 as they host the Elon Phoenix in a single game home match-up at 6 p.m., at Parkwood Athletic Field in Durham, N.C.
