NCCU SOFTBALL SWEPT BY CAMPBELL IN DOUBLEHEADER

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – During the doubleheader match-up between the North Carolina Central University softball team and the Camels of Campbell University the Lady Eagles dropped both contests to Campbell falling 14-2 and 7-1 on Monday, March 25, in Buies Creek, N.C., at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

After a two-run home run from Campbell’s Raven Lee in the bottom of the first the Camels took an early 2-0 lead over the Lady Eagles. NCCU answered in the top of the second after a single to left field from red shirt freshman Joy Simpson scored fellow rookie Amber Kirkland from third putting the Lady Eagles on the board for the first time during the contest.

Game one quickly turned on NCCU in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Eagles trailed Campbell 2-1 entering the inning when two NCCU errors and three Camel homers, including one grand slam, allowed CU to score 11 runs off of seven hits putting them ahead of the Lady Eagles 13-1.

In the top of the third, the Lady Eagles gave one last effort following a string of Campbell errors. Senior Nadia Jefferies reached first on an error from Camel shortstop then advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from Markell Wylie and stole third base before scoring on a muffed throw by CU’s second baseman.

Campbell brought the score to 14-2 after an RBI single from Casey Taylor down the left field line scored Brittany Bruce in the bottom of the fourth.

Rookie pitcher London Booker (1-15) took home the loss for the Lady Eagles throwing the first 1.2 innings of the contest. Booker allowed nine hits, gave up 13 runs, three earned runs, four walks and struck out one batter during her time in the circle.

Senior Kayla McPeek relieved Booker midway through the second inning pitching the remaining 2.1. McPeek gave up four hits, one run, and struck out one batter for NCCU.

Game two started out with the Lady Eagles striking first. After a scoreless inning between both teams in the first, NCCU scored the first run of the day during the top of the second inning. Junior transfer Camille Hampton started the inning with a line shot double to the left field fence before she advanced to third on a single to third base from Simpson.

Junior Regina Diaz earned her first of two hits in the second inning with a shot past second base, scoring Hampton, giving the Lady Eagles their first lead of the series.

The Camels offense capitalized on a NCCU throwing error in the bottom of the second, scoring CU’s Brittany Arnn, and tying the game at one.

Innings three and four remained scoreless between both teams before the Camel offense went on attack again during the bottom of the fifth inning. Campbell scored six runs off of four hits, three which were home runs, in the bottom of the inning, putting them on top of the Lady Eagles 7-1.

NCCU could not answer during the final two innings as they fell to the Camels 7-1 during game two.

Senior Bianka Molina (0-7) started on the mound for the Lady Eagles during the second match up, taking home the loss. Molina gave up seven hits, seven runs, two earned runs and struck out one batter during her time on the rubber.

Booker replaced Molina in the circle to close out game two, giving up no hits, no runs, walking one batter and striking out two.

NCCU falls to 2-24 on the season while Campbell advances to 20-11.

The Lady Eagles return to action Saturday, March 30, as they being Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. NCCU hosts Bethune-Cookman in a weekend series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m., at Parkwood Athletic Field in Durham, N.C.
