NCCU SOFTBALL DROPS TWO TO NO. 24 TAR HEELS

Germ Finishes 3-for-5 at the Plate during Doubleheader

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team’s four hits and two runs in game two of the doubleheader was not enough against the University of North Carolina. The Lady Eagles fell 9-0 in game one and 10-2 during game two to the No. 24 nationally ranked Tar Heels on Tuesday, March 19, in Chapel Hill, N.C., at Anderson Stadium.

During game one, junior transfer London Germ earned a single down the third base line in the top of the first inning marking the Lady Eagles only hit of the contest. The Tar Heels answered in the bottom of the inning scoring one run, putting them on top 1-0.

In the bottom of the second inning UNC scored an additional four runs off five hits and one error putting them ahead of NCCU 5-0.

After a scoreless third inning for the Lady Eagles, NCCU held the Tar Heels scoreless during the bottom half of the inning after three caught pop ups.

UNC put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on four hits and one Lady Eagle error. NCCU could not answer in the fifth inning remaining scoreless during the match-up as the Tar Heels took captured the 9-0 victory.

Freshman London Booker (1-13) pitched all four innings for NCCU giving up nine hits, nine runs, seven earned runs, walking one batter and striking out one.

The Lady Eagles started game two with another single from Germ down the first base line. Senior Nadia Jefferies then reached first on a fielder’s choice, while Germ was safe at second on a UNC fielding error. With runners on first and second NCCU could not convert any runs, ending the top of the inning with no runs, one hit, one error and one left on base.

UNC answered in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs, giving them a 4-0 lead heading into the second.

During the top of the second senior Bianka Molina started off the inning with a double to right center for the Lady Eagles. Following Joy Simpson’s strike out freshman Angelique Perricelli walked to first. With runners on first and second senior Shakemia Edwards grounded out to the pitcher advancing both runners.

Germ came to the plate with two outs singling to left field, scoring Molina, and putting the first run of the day on the board for NCCU. Senior Nadia Jefferies continued the momentum hitting a single past the short stop, scoring Perricelli. The inning ended after Amber Kirkland popped up to short stop, as the Lady Eagles earned two runs off of three hits, and left two runners on base.

In the bottom of the second the Tar Heels answered scoring five additional runs making their lead 9-2 after two complete.

Both teams held each other scoreless in the third inning before UNC went on to add one more run to the score board giving them an eight run advantage and ending the game after five innings of play with a score of 10-2.

Booker (1-14) started on the mound during game two, throwing two innings, giving up eight hits, nine runs, eight earned runs and walking two batters. Molina relieved the rookie pitcher throwing the final two innings, giving up three hits and one run.

The Lady Eagles fall to 2-21 on the season as the Tar Heels advance to 21-10.

NCCU softball returns to the diamond Wednesday, March 20, as they travel to Elon, N.C., to take on the Phoenix from Elon University in a single-game matchup slated to start at 4 p.m.
