Box Score 2 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The North Carolina Central University softball team split its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division match-up of the season against the Lady Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore, dropping the first game 11-3 and winning the second contest 7-3 on Wednesday, March 13, in Princess Anne, Md.
During game one, the Lady Hawks posted 13 hits compared to NCCU’s five.
UMES stuck first scoring two runs during the bottom of the first inning after a two run homer from Morgan King and an additional two runs during the bottom of the second on a single to right field from Carmen Gurrola. After two complete innings the Lady Hawks led NCCU 4-0.
Entering the top of the third, the Lady Eagles scored all three if their runs of the contest, starting off the inning when
Angelique Perricelli reached first on a dropped third strike and advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch following
Martha Batie reaching first on a hit by pitch.
London Germ got her first hit of the afternoon as she bunted a single advancing Perricelli to third and Batie to second. Senior
Nadia Jefferies came to the plate with no outs and singled to left first, scoring NCCU's first run. Rookie
Amber Kirkland's two RBI single up the middle scored the remaining two runs for the Lady Eagles before they were shut out for the remainder of the contest.
UMES ended the conference match-up in five innings after scoring an additional two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth, while holding the Lady Eagles scoreless, giving them the 11-3 victory over NCCU.
Freshman
London Booker (1-11) took home the lose for the Lady Eagles giving up 13 hits, 11 runs, all which were earned, walking four batters while striking out five.
Game two proved to be more successful for the Lady Eagles as they scored seven runs off of 14 total hits, adding a 7-3 MEAC victory to the books.
Again in game two UMES struck first after a SAC fly from King put the Lady Hawks on the board 1-0 after the first complete inning.
During the second NCCU answered when freshman
Markell Wylie walked then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior
Shakemia Edwards singled up the middle scoring her teammate and tying the game at one after an inning and a half of play.
Trenece Nash hit a homer for the host team during the bottom of the inning as UMES pulled back ahead 2-1.
In the top of the third, with Germ on first, Jefferies singled before advancing to third on a throwing error, scoring Germ. Kirkland then came to the plate with one out and singled, scoring Jefferies and putting NCCU back on top 3-2 heading into the bottom of the inning.
During the fourth inning the Lady Eagles added one more run to their lead after Perricellia doubled down the left field line and then scored from Germs single to short stop.
UMES gave one last effort in the bottom of the fourth when Emily Diseroad doubled to center field, scoring James and leaving the score at 4-3 after four complete innings of play.
The Lady Eagles added two more security runs during the top of the fifth and sixth innings off of a double from
Regina Diaz and single from
Kayla McPeek in the fifth, and a single from Wylie in the sixth.
NCCU played out the entire seven innings of the match-up, taking home the 7-3 victory of the Lady Hawks.
The Lady Eagles return to the field Thursday, March 14, when they take on the Lady Hornets from Delaware State, first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
