NCCU’S ATAKORA-BEDIAKO CAPTURES GOLD MEDAL AT MEAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Redshirt junior jumper finishes first in the men’s triple jump

LANDOVER, Md.
Nana Atakora-Bediako brought home gold after finishing first in the men’s triple jump as North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track and field teams participated in the 2013 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex on Feb. 14-16 in Landover, Md.
 
Redshirt junior Atakora-Bediako led all competitors with a final jump of 14.14 meters (49 feet, 8.25 inches).
 
The three-day competition hosted the 13 MEAC track and field programs consisting of: Hampton, Morgan State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Coppin State, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State, Savannah State, Delaware State, Howard, and NCCU.
 
In addition to Atakora-Bediako, the men’s field team had two other top-five performances. Freshman Joshua McClam earned a silver medal with a second place finished in long jump, leaping 6.95 meters (22ft. 9.75in.). Earning a bronze medal, senior Willie Calvin finished third in the high jump, clearing a jump of 2.06 meters (6 ft. 9in.).
 
On the women’s side, the Lady Eagles had five top-ten performances. Redshirt junior Anthonia Ballard and senior Jasmine Wanamaker finished fourth (8.74 seconds) and sixth (8.87 seconds), respectively, in the women’s 60-meter hurdles.  Senior Ashley McCoy completed the 60-meter dash in 7.59 seconds, earning fifth place. Sophomore Amber Brooks finished seventh in the mile run with a time of 5:17.24. The foursome of Taisha ParkinsLa'Creesha Gore, Syrita Hunt, and Brooks earned ninth place in the distance medley run with a time of 13:16.89.
 
As a team, the NCCU women placed 10th with 14 points, while the NCCU men finished in 11th place with 24 points.
