NCCU SOFTBALL WRAPS UP SUBWAY CLASSIC WITH 14-0 LOSS TO USC-UPSATE

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team wrapped up its season-opening four game stretch after facing the USC-Upstate Subway Classic host Spartans where they fell 14-0 to the hot hitters in Spartanburg, S.C., at Cyrill Stadium.

Sophomore Tiphani Jackson was the lone Lady Eagle named to the Subway Upstate Classic All-Tournament Team after starting off the 2013 season with a .500 batting average, .500 slugging and on base percentage, went 4-for-8 from the plate with four hits and four total bases.  

During NCCU’s fourth and final game of the tournament the Lady Eagles suffered their largest loss of the weekend, falling to USC-Upstate 14-0.

After a scoreless first inning between both ball teams, the Spartans jumped out to an early 6-0 lead at the bottom of the second inning. USC-Upstate continued to pound in the runs during the third scoring an additional seven before the NCCU coach staff made a pitching substitution.

In addition to Jackson, freshman Jenny Tracy and senior Shakemia Edwards each earned a hit a piece for the Lady Eagles during the contest.

Freshman London Booker (0-2) took home the loss during the game, starting on the mound for NCCU and pitching 2.1 innings before retiring from the circle. Book gave up 14 hits, 13 runs, and eight earned runs during her time on the rubber.  Senior Bianka Molina (0-2) entered the game midway through the bottom of the third. Molina threw 1.2 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out one Spartan batter.

Six total Spartans earned two hits during the game while USC-Upstate was led offensively by third baseman Kaitlyn Jaeger who contributed two hits, two runs, four RBIs and two homeruns.

The Lady Eagles return to the field on Tuesday, Feb. 12 when they host their home-opening game against Longwood. The first pitch of the double-header is set for 2 p.m.
