NCCU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATS GWU FOR BIGGEST VICTORY IN SIX YEARS

Lady Eagles Snap Five-Game Losing Streak to Gardner-Webb with 89-58 victory

Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team pulled off its biggest victory in six years after handing Gardner-Webb its first loss of the season, and snapping a five-game losing streak to the Runnin' Bulldogs in a 89-58 win on Monday, Nov. 25 in Durham, N.C.

The Lady Eagles 31-point, first home victory of the season, marks the most points scored by an NCCU squad since Dec. 8, 2007 when the Lady Eagles beat Fayetteville State 95-82 in Durham and is also the largest margin of victory the Lady Eagles have earned since a 75-41 win over Virginia State on Feb. 27, 2007 during the first round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament in Charlotte.

Redshirt senior Jessica Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) led NCCU offensively for the fourth time this season earning a second 20-plus point scoring performance earning 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, 5-of-8 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The 5-4 shooting guard also pulled down four boards, dished four assists and collected three steals during the victory.

In addition to Freeman, junior transfer Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected her third double-double of the season pulling down a game-best 10 rebounds and contributing a season-high 17 points.

Two other Lady Eagles scored in double-figures during the victory. Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) earned 13 points and dished a season-best six helpers, while rookie Morgan Jones (Stockbridge, Ga.) earned a season-best 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point land and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.

The Runnin' Bulldogs started off the contest strong on a 5-0 lead over NCCU in the opening minute of play. A single free throw from senior Tiffany Gary (Delray Beach, Fla.) at the 18:03 mark ended the scoring drought for the Lady Eagles.

A steal and dish from Conerly to Gary tied the contest for the first time with 16:34 left in the first frame as the NCCU offense picked up, never trailing again, and going on a 11-4 run setting the score at 19-12.

Jones hit her first three of the night as Conerly found her on the wing, giving the Lady Eagles their largest lead of 10, with under eight minutes left to play.

Heading into the intermission, NCCU lead the Runnin' Bulldogs 34-28.

Coming out of the locker room the momentum stayed in the hands of the Lady Eagles as they pushed a 20-3 run over Gardner-Webb in the first five minutes of action.

It was all NCCU for the remainder of the game as Jones knocked down her second shot from behind the arc on a dish from Freeman with 5:12 left to play, giving the Lady Eagles a 30-point lead.

A last second rebound and layup from rookie Shiana Carrington (Corona, Calif.) put NCCU on top by 31 as time expired, with the final score locked in at 89-58.

As a team, the Lady Eagles shot 30-of-60 from the field (50 percent), 8-of-13 from three-point land (61.5%) and 21-of-38 from the foul line (55.3%) while pulling down 50 boards, dishing 19 helpers, blocking three Runnin' Bulldogs shots, and seizing 11 steals.

Catrine Green led Gardner-Webb with 12 points and five rebounds during the Runnin' Bulldogs first defeat of the season.

NCCU improves to 3-2 on the season as Gardner-Webb falls to 4-1.

The Lady Eagles hit the road to close out the opening month of the 2013-14 season in Spartanburg, S.C., where NCCU will take on the Wofford College Terriers in a 5 p.m. match-up.
