50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EAGLES' 1963 CIAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Coach Herman Riddick's Eagles Posted 8-1 Record to Win League Title 50 Years Ago

Fifty years ago, the Eagles of N.C. College at  Durham (now North Carolina Central University) won the 1963 CIAA Football Championship by finishing the season with an 8-1 overall record.

On Saturday (Oct. 19), in honor of the 50th anniversary of the accomplishment, members of the 1963 team will be recognized during NCCU's homecoming football game versus Morgan State inside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

For Eagles head coach Herman Riddick, whose name is branded on NCCU's football stadium, the 1963 conference title was his fifth as the Eagles' coach.

The Eagles opened the campaign with seven consecutive victories before being dealt a one-point loss against Virginia Union. They closed the season with a 6-0 shutout of North Carolina A&T on Nov. 28, 1963 in Greensboro, N.C.
