CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman
Joshua McClam topped North Carolina Central University with a pair of top-three finishes at the Tiger Indoor Track & Field Challenge, hosted by Clemson University on Friday. In all, NCCU’s men’s and women’s teams combined for 11 top-five performances during the one-day meet.
McClam, a native of Holly Springs, N.C., was the runner-up in the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.99 meters (22 feet, 11.25 inches), falling just shy of event winner James Abdul-Mateen of Clemson (7.06m/23-2.0). The rookie also placed third in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 13.33m (43-9.0) and 11th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98 seconds.
NCCU senior
Willie Calvin (Greenville, Miss.) recorded two third-place finishes by clearing the men’s high jump bar at 2.14m (7-0.25) and landing 6.93m (22-9.0) in the long jump pit.
Lady Eagles junior
Alexis Sherrill (Durham, N.C.) posted a personal-best mark of 1.64m (5-4.5) in the women’s high jump to place third.
Also recording personal-best standards were senior
Phillip Barren (Raleigh, N.C.) with a time of 6.76 seconds to place third in the 60m dash, and senior
Jasmine Wanamaker (Philadelphia, Pa.) with a time of 8.68 seconds in the women’s 60m hurdles to place fifth behind four runners from Clemson.
Other top-five efforts for NCCU were turned in by sophomore
Amber Brooks (Tampa, Fla.) in the women’s 800m run (5th; 2:22.95), freshman #Thomas Davis, Jr.# (Baltimore, Md.) in the men’s 200m dash (5th; 23.26), freshman
Cynteria Mitchell (Wilmington, N.C.) in the women’s high jump (4th; 1.54m), and the women’s 4x400m relay (5th; 4:06.61).
NCCU returns to the track on Jan. 18-19 at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
