ELON, N.C. – For the second straight weekend, North Carolina Central University rookie
Christine Anthony came away from a volleyball event with all-tournament team honors, this time at the Elon Phoenix Classic hosted by Elon University.
A native of Willemstad, Curacao, Anthony recorded 37 kills and 24 digs in three matches on Friday and Saturday, including 15 kills and 14 digs in a 3-1 loss to Gardner-Webb University on Saturday.
As a team on Saturday, the Eagles opened play with a 3-0 (25-15, 25- 21, 25-15) setback to event host Elon. Anthony topped NCCU with 10 kills along with six digs. Sophomore
Dayana Arrufat Rondon added seven kills and five digs, while sophomore
Ashley McCarthy contributed six kills, eight digs and two blocks.
In NCCU’s second match Saturday, the Eagles split the first two sets with Gardner-Webb before dropping the third set 27-25 and eventually the match, 3-1 (25-17, 25-27, 27-25, 25-16). Besides Anthony’s aforementioned leading statistics, Arrufat chipped in 14 kills and nine digs, while redshirt freshman
Denni Johnson collected 12 kills. Sophomore setter
Alice Genna distributed a team-best 24 assists.
NCCU (1-7) returns home on Tuesday, Sept. 4 to host Campbell University at 7 p.m. inside McDougald-McLendon Gym. Admission is free.
