DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University rookie outside hitter Christine Anthony topped the Eagles with 51 kills in four matches on Friday and Saturday to earn a spot on the NCCU Women’s Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Anthony, a native of Willemstad, Curacao, also contributed 20 digs, seven service aces and five blocks during the weekend event.

As a team, NCCU suffered losses to UNC Greensboro and Liberty on Friday, then Bradley and Winthrop on Saturday, but the Eagles did manage to take sets from the only two undefeated teams (UNCG and Bradley) in the invitational. In fact, the set NCCU battled to win 33-31 over Bradley on Saturday morning was the only set the Braves dropped in three weekend matches.

Anthony recorded five kills and four digs in that set victory over Bradley, and finished that match with 14 kills and eight digs. NCCU sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon also posted 14 kills against the Braves, while junior Kalin Russell added 10 kills. Freshman setter Melissa Rabell Pineiro distributed a season-high 42 assists to go along with five digs and two service aces during the 3-1 (31-33, 25-18, 25-14, 25-23) loss to Bradley, which took advantage of its towering height at the net to amass 63 kills and nine total team blocks.

In the final match of the 2012 NCCU Invitational, Winthrop’s steady .427 hitting percentage and 12 service aces resulted in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-22) sweep of the Eagles. NCCU was paced by Arrufat Rondon’s 12 kills, while Anthony added nine. Rabell Pineiro tallied 20 assists and six digs, while sophomore Ashley McCarthy also had six digs for the Eagles.

After playing four matches in two days, NCCU returns to its home hardwood inside McDougald-McLendon Gym on Sunday (Aug. 26) to face Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Hampton University at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
