NCCU SOFTBALL VENTURES TO LONGWOOD FOR WEEKEND TOURNAMENT

Lady Eagles Embark on Their Third Tournament of the Season

THE TOURNAMENT
In their third weekend tournament of the 2012 season, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University travel to Farmville, Va., for the adidas Longwood Classic on the Longwood University campus on March 10-11.

Saturday, March 10
  • NCCU vs. Longwood              11:00 a.m.
  • NCCU vs. Binghamton           1:15 p.m.
Sunday, March 11
  • NCCU vs. Binghamton              10:00 a.m.
  • NCCU vs. Longwood                 2:45 p.m.

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY “LANCERS”
The Longwood Lancers, who are members of the Big South Conference, are 12-7 on the season.  This weekend marks the first meeting between the two squads since 2002.
 
BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY “BEARCATS”
The Binghamton Bearcats, who are members of the America East Conference, are 3-7 on the season.  This weekend marks the first meeting between the two squads in school’s history.

After the two-day adidas Longwood Classic, NCCU takes on the Blue Hose of Presbyterian in a doubleheader match on Tuesday, March 13 at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.

LAST TIME ON THE DIAMOND:  NCCU-0 UNC Greensboro-8 (March 7, 2012)

GREENSBORO, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - In spite of the North Carolina Central University softball team leaving UNC Greensboro without a run in three innings of play, the Lady Spartans five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning secured a 8-0 win on Wednesday, March 7 in Greensboro, N.C., on the UNCG Softball Field.
 
Maroon and gray senior Andrea Searls led the team with the only hit of the contest, as junior Bianka Molina tallied the lost and three runners were left stranded on base.
 
UNCG seized their sixth win of the season on eight runs, seven hits and seven RBI, while Cory Mattson, who obtained the win by striking out eight batters in maroon and gray, pitched a complete game.
 
Molina was the opening Lady Eagles’ pitcher, where she allowed three hits, three runs and walked two Lady Spartans against 15 batters during 4.0 innings played.
 
The first inning of play opened with the Lady Spartans bringing home two runners for an early 2-0 lead.
 
NCCU halted a potential pair of runs with a catch by sophomore Regina Diaz during the bottom of the third inning with the Lady Spartans at bat.
 
While both the NCCU and UNCG pitching and defensive effort left the second and the third innings without a run, a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Spartans closer to victory with a single run.
 
Maroon and gray pitcher Kayla McPeek took control of the mound during the bottom of the fifth.  With 1.1 innings of pitching, McPeek permitted four hits, five runs and also walked a duo.
 
UNCG snapped their previous bottom of the fifth endless runs with a pair of runs on two times at bat. 
 
With four consecutive Lady Spartans runs for score of 7-0 in the bottom of the seven, NCCU head softball coach Theresa Stephens relieved McPeek and sent senior Aurora Baker to the circle for less than one inning of play.
 
NCCU is now 1-16 on the season as they enter into their third tournament of the season in Farmville, Va., during the Adidas Longwood Classic.  The two-day event consists of squads from Binghamton (American East Conference), the hosts Longwood (Big South) and NCCU (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
