NCCU SOFTBALL DROPS MEAC DOUBLEHEADER TO NORFOLK STATE

Carmichael tallies three hits in the loss

(www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central University sophomore Cember Carmichael led the Lady Eagles with three hits despite falling to 6-3 and 7-1 to the Spartans of Norfolk State University on Wednesday, March 28 in Raleigh, N.C., at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
 
The mighty maroon opened the doubleheader with 6-3 loss to the Spartans.  Both squads remained run less until the top of the third when NSU tallied three runs and three hits to take a 3-0 lead at the top of the sixth.
 
By the top of the sixth, the Virginia based Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes advanced their lead to 6-0.
 
NCCU amassed three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a score of 6-3.
 
After ending NSU’s seventh inning batting outing with three consecutive outs, NCCU made its effort to make an offensive surge with junior Nadia Jefferies reaching third base before being caught stealing.
 
Maroon and gray junior Bianka Molina pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, permitting seven hits and six runs against 29 batters.  Carmichael ended the contest with three hits on three times at bat, while senior Andrea Searls notched one run, one hit and one RBI on three times at bat.
 
Jamie Schulle maintained NSU’s mound action for 7.0 innings, where she allowed six hits and three runs against 26 batters with eight strikeouts.  Alina Moriarty and Liz Riley led the Spartan offense.  Moriarty amassed two hits and one RBI, as Riley tallied two runs, one hit and one RBI.
 
NSU sealed the doubleheader with a 7-1 victory.
 
NCCU and NSU were gridlocked 1-1 after the first inning, as senior Nadia Jefferies reached home for the Lady Eagles.  Until the Spartans tallied three runs at the top of the fifth and another three runs in the top of the seventh.
 
Junior Shakemia Edwards gathered two hits in the second NCCU loss.  Senior pitcher Aurora Baker pitched a complete game, where she allowed 13 hits and seven runs against 33 batters.
 
NSU’s Riley commanded the circle for the entire contest, where she allowed three hits and one run against 22 against batters, while striking out five maroon and gray batter.  Haley Ward gathered two runs, five hits and one RBI on five times at bat.
 
NCCU drops to 3-28 on the season and 2-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
 
The mighty maroon travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., to take on MEAC members Bethune-Cookman, who are the 2011 defending MEAC Champions.  The Lady Eagles battle the Wildcats on Saturday, March 31 at 1:00/3:00 p.m. and conclude the weekend with a 12:00 p.m. game on Sunday, April 1 in the sunshine state.
 
The mighty maroon continues its road play with a Wednesday, April 4 3:00/5:00 p.m. doubleheader against the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
