BUIES CREEK, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – Sophomore Cember Carmichael provided another successful performance at bat for North Carolina Central University in spite of the Lady Eagles not clutching success, as the mighty maroon went 0-4 at Campbell University’s Hampton Inn/Camel Stampede Challenge on March 16-17 in Buies Creek, N.C.
Carmichael attained all-tournament team honors for NCCU in the two-day competition with two runs, three hit and four RBI.
NCCU wrapped up Friday action with a 6-5 loss to the Drexel and a 7-2 loss to Campbell.
In the first matchup with the Dragons, Drexel held the Lady Eagles runless while seizing one run in the bottom of the second and five runs in the bottom of the third.
But the mighty maroon would not concede by holding DU to no runs on the last three innings, while notching four runs in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the sixth.
As four student-athletes in maroon and gray tallied a run, Carmichael continued to guide the Lady Eagles offensively with one run, two hits and three RBI.
NCCU junior Bianka Molina, who continues to hold down the circle with complete games, struck out three Drexel batters, while allowing eight hits, six runs against 22 batters in 6.0 innings.
While Drexel notches the win, as a unit NCCU tallied 10 hits, five RBI and four earned runs compared to DU’s eight hits, four RBI and three earned runs.
The Dragons utilized two pitchers during Friday play, with Shelby Taylor and Hillary Allen at the mound. In 4.1 innings of the play and the win, Taylor struck out four NCCU batters, as she allowed seven hits and four runs. Allen, who earned the save, struck out two batters, while permitting three hits and one run.
DU’s Comfort Ahonkai gathered three hits and one run on three times at bat for the Dragons.
In the third meeting with the Campbell Camels, NCCU amassed two runs and four hits, while seven Lady Eagles made it on base.
Campbell opened the contest with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, followed by five runs in the third inning. NCCU tallied two runs in the top of the seventh to close out Friday play with a 7-2 loss.
NCCU senior Aurora Baker pitched a complete game over the course of 6.0 innings, where she allowed eight hits and seven runs against 25 batters along with gathering four strike outs. Carmichael tallied one run, one hit and the only RBI of the contest for the maroon and gray.
Campbell’s Brittany Arnin attained her sixth pitching win with five strikes out against 25 batters, while allowing four hits and two runs in 7.0 innings.
The mighty maroon returned to action on Saturday, March 17 with a 10:00 a.m. game against Drexel and a 4:00 p.m. battle with Campbell.
Drexel, who went 3-1 on the weekend, tallied the third win with a 20-1 victory over NCCU.
For the first time on the weekend, NCCU opened the contest with a run, but total of three hits in the contest left the Lady Eagles without a run in the following innings. DU, who was runless in the top of the first, tallied runs in all remaining innings of the five inning game.
NCCU freshman Martha Batie reached home in the bottom of the first on the batting outing of senior Andrea Sealrs who gathered one hit and one RBI in the loss.
Molina and Baker shared the pitching responsibilities for the mighty maroon. Molina threw for 3.2 innings, where she allowed 12 hits and 16 runs (11 earned runs), while striking out three Dragons in the face of 29 batters. Baker relieved Molina for 1.1 innings of play to permit six hits and four runs against 10 batters.
Hillary Allen pitched a complete game for Drexel, striking out four Lady Eagles and allowing three runs and one hit against 20 batters. Paige Collins led the Dragons’ offense with three runs, three hits and six RBI on three times at bat.
In a final 5-2 loss to Campbell, NCCU gathered two runs and three hits.
Campbell initiated the contest with five runs, while the mighty maroon began with one run, while the Lady Eagles went on to score a run in the top of the seventh for a two runs overall.
With her 15
th appearance from the circle, Molina pitched a complete game once again. Molina threw for 6.0 innings, where she allowed eight hits and five runs against 25 batters.
NCCU junior Nadia Jefferies notched two runs and one hit on four times at bat, as fellow new classmate Sarah Kaiser tallied one hit and one RBI on two times at bat.
NCCU declines to 1-26 on the season and prepares for a two-day Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday, March 20 and Norfolk State on Wednesday, March 28.
