NCCU INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD READY FOR FIRST MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Conference Meet set for Thursday-Saturday in Landover, Md.

Day 1 Results

DURHAM, N.C.
- The North Carolina Central University indoor track and field teams are set for the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which will be held this Thursday through Saturday in Landover, Md., at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

The Eagles have not participated in a conference championship event since the 2006-2007 season when NCCU was a part of the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The spotlight will be on Eagle junior Willie Calvin who led the MEAC in the men’s high jump during the 2011-2012 season. Calvin jumped an impressive 2.18 meters (7 feet, 1.75 inches) at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 14, in Blacksburg, Va.

Lady Eagles junior Ashley McCoy and freshmen Anthonia Ballard also put up impressive number during their 2011-2012 regular season campaign. McCoy finished ranked second overall in the conference in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.46 seconds on Dec. 4, at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open in Newport News, Va. Ballard also completed the season ranked number two in the 60m hurdles, posting her best time of 8.65 at the UNC Kent Taylor Invitational on Jan. 28, in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Competition will begin Thursday at 1 p.m. with the men's heptathlon and women’s 5,000m followed by the women's long jump at 1:15 p.m.  The day continues with the men’s 5,000m and semifinals of the men’s and women’s 200m races. Day one concludes with the men’s long jump final.

The championships continue on Friday with the men's heptathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the women’s pentathlon, men’s and women’s high jump, and men’s and women’s weight throw. The student-athletes return to the track to compete in the men’s and women’s 800m. Semifinals of the men’s and women’s 60m hurdle, 60m dash and 400m dash will also take place during day two’s action.

The competition concludes on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. with the men’s and women’s shot put and pole vault, and the men’s and women’s triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s and women’s mile run.  Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 3:40 p.m.

Other competitors on the men's side will consist of: Brandon Addison (400m, 4x400m relay), Phillip Barren (60m, 4x400m relay), Kendall Delapp (Long Jump), Jamar Jones (800m, 4x400m relay), Jaye Pratt (4x400m relay), Gregory Roper (200m, 400, 4x400m relay) and Nealie Whitt (Shot Pot, Weight Throw).

On the women’s side: Amber Brooks (mile, 800m, Distance Medley Relay), Delesha Conquest (Distance Medley Relay), Jazmen Flagler (Pentathlon, High Jump, Triple Jump), #La’Creesha Gore# (200m, 4x400m relay), Ciara Houston (400m, 4x400m relay), Sararesa Hudson (400m, 4x400m relay), Syrita Hunt (Distance Medley Relay), Taisha Parkins (800m, Distance Medley Relay), Alexis Sherrill (High Jump, Long Jump), Dreanna Wallace (mile, 3000m, Distance Medley Relay) and Jasmine Wanamaker (60m hurdles).
