NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – North Carolina Central University seniors Ashley McCoy and Willie Calvin kicked off the indoor track & field season with event victories at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Saturday, Dec. 8 inside the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.

McCoy, a native of Wilmington, N.C., ran to victory in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 25.11 seconds, beating out runner-up Mary Allen of Richmond by less than a half-second (25.46). McCoy also ran in the women’s 60m dash, placing 10th with a time of 7.66.

Calvin, a native of Greenville, Miss., won the men’s high jump by leaping over the bar set at 2.15 meters (7’ 0.5”) on his third and final attempt. The reigning MEAC indoor high jump champion was the only competitor in the 27-man field to clear seven feet.

In all, NCCU posted 10 top-five individual performances, with five by the Lady Eagles and five by the Eagles. The NCCU men’s 4x400m relay squad, consisting of Greg Roper, Phillip Barren, Jaye Pratt and Brandon Addison, earned a spot in the top five by placing fifth with a time of 3:24.43.

Barren recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the men’s 60m dash (6.91) and the 200m dash (22.26). Addison also placed third in the men’s 400m dash (50.42), while freshman Joshua McClam placed third in the men’s long jump (7.10m/23’ 3.5”).

Alexis Sherrill placed third in the women’s high jump (1.54m/5’0.5”), while Cynteria Mitchell finished two spots behind in fifth place with the same height. In the women’s 60m hurdles, Jasmine Wanamaker crossed the finish line in fourth place (8.80), while Anthonia Ballard was next in fifth place (8.90).

The NCCU indoor track & field teams take a break for the holiday season and return to action Jan. 11 at the Clemson University Invitational.
