DURHAM, N.C. – Rookie Christine Anthony and junior Kalin Russell provided notable offensive performances in North Carolina Central University’s four-set loss (18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19) to the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Friday, Nov. 9 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium in Durham, N.C.
Anthony collected her ninth double-double of the season for the Eagles, leading the team in kills with 15, as well as digs with 13. Russell contributed 11 kills along with two service aces for the NCCU offense. Sophomore Alice Genna delivered 34 assists, as freshmen Melissa Rabell Pineiro collected 10 digs.
NCCU amassed 45 kills on 144 attempts, 39 assists, four service aces, 41 digs and one team block.
Anthony led set one during the Eagles lone victory, 25-18, over the Bulldogs with four kills and four digs.
During set two, NCCU battled through six ties and five lead changes as the momentum shifted in favor of the Lady Bulldogs. SCSU defeated the Eagles 25-21, led by Desire Waller’s five kills.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to dominate during sets three and four of the series, beating the Eagles 25-20 and 25-19.
SCSU finished with 52 kills on 119 attempts, 49 assists, two service aces, 62 digs and nine team blocks. Waller paced the Bulldogs’ offense with a total of 31 kills, while Elizabeth Webb contributed 22 digs for SCSU. Melanie Williams circulated 44 assists, while Taylor Bailey collected six blocks.
NCCU drops to 7-21 on the season and 5-4 in the MEAC, while South Carolina State advances to 9-13 and 6-3 in conference play.
NCCU volleyball concludes the 2012 regular season this Sunday, Nov. 11, as the Eagles take on the Lady Tigers of Savannah State University in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
