NCCU VOLLEYBALL HOSTS BULLDOGS, TIGERS TO CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON


DURHAM, N.C. – This weekend, the North Carolina Central University women’s volleyball team will play its two final teams of the regular season.  NCCU will face South Carolina State on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. and Savannah State on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2:00 p.m., in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium. Admission is free.

The Eagles will be meeting South Carolina State and Savannah State for the second time this season. During the last match-ups, NCCU had a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) against South Carolina State and a 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-5, 25-13) against Savannah State.

Savannah State has struggled throughout the season with a losing streak of 0-31 overall (0-8 MEAC), while South Carolina State, 15-12 overall (5-3 MEAC), is competing with the Eagles for second place in the MEAC southern division.

NCCU’s senior outside hitter Christine Anthony has been a vital part of the team as she has been at the top of the chart on offense and defense, totaling 333 kills (3.70 per game) and 215 digs (2.39 per game).

Junior middle hitter Kalin Russell and sophomore outside hitter Dayana Arrufat Rondon have also contributed to the success of the team. Russell leads the team in defensive blocks, totaling 24 solo blocks and 58 block assists. Rondon totaled 304.5 points this season, powered by 271 kills (3.01 per game), ranking No. 2 on the offensive charts.

Offensively, the Eagles have gathered 1000 kills and 125 service aces. Defensively, they have rounded up 989 digs (11.0 per game) and 149.5 total blocks.

After the conclusion of the regular season, NCCU will play in the MEAC Women’s Volleyball Championships on Nov. 16 -18, in Baltimore, Md., at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex.
