DURHAM, N.C. - Led by the offensive threesome of Christine Anthony, Dyanna Arrufat Rondon and Kalin Russell, the North Carolina Central University volleyball team captured second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Sunday (Nov. 11) by closing out the regular season with a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-8, 25-9) of Savannah State inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium in Durham, N.C.
Anthony topped the strong offensive performance from the Eagles with nine kills and five services aces, while contributing five digs. Russell and Arrufat also collected nine and eight kills, respectively, plus three aces each.
Assisting the offensive success of NCCU was sophomore setter Alice Genna who earned 28 assists, four kills and four digs during the finale. Freshmen defensive specialist Marilyn Sherbondy gathered five digs on the defensive end.
As a team, NCCU amassed 38 kills on 58 attempts, 31 assists, 12 service aces, 20 digs and two blocks.
The Lady Tigers finished the game with 15 kills on 55 attempts, 15 assists, two service aces and 13 digs.
The Eagles finish out the regular season 8-21 overall with a 6-4 conference record.
NCCU enters the MEAC Championship as the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division and will play Hampton, the No. 3 seed in the Northern Division, on Friday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. in Baltimore, Md., at the Coppin State P.E. Complex.
