DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University sophomore Amber Brooks captured her first meet title of the 2012 season by winning the NCCU Eagles Cross Country Classic on Saturday morning at Forest Hills Park in Durham, N.C.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Brooks topped the field of 19 runners by finishing the 5k course with a time of 20 minutes, 46.05 seconds. Zikeena Parker of Saint Augustine’s University was her nearest competitor, crossing the finish line 13 seconds (20:59.55) behind Brooks.
Fellow NCCU sophomore Taisha Parkins placed third with a time of 21:14.47, while teammates Delesha Conquest (21:46.55) and Regina Summerville (21:47.95) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to help the Lady Eagles win the team meet title. NCCU tallied 24 points to beat out St. Augustine’s with 31 points, followed by Fayetteville State University in third place with 78 points.
The NCCU men were led by freshman Rodiero Shambley, who placed fifth with a time of 28:48.65 on the 6k course.
St. Augustine’s earned the men’s team title by sweeping the top four spots to accumulate only 17 points, while the Eagles settled for second place with 41 points.
NCCU closes out the regular season at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Princess Anne. Md.
