NCCU VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS SCSU FOR SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT

Anthony Leads Eagles to 3-2 Conference Record with 16 Kills

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- The North Carolina Central University women’s volleyball team earned its second straight shutout victory and improved its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record to 3-2 with a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) of South Carolina State University on Sunday in Orangeburg, S.C.

Rookie Christine Anthony led the way for the Eagles with 16 kills, five digs, two blocks and two service aces. NCCU sophomore Dayana Arrufat Rondon chipped in 11 kills, six digs and a career-high five service aces. Sophomore setter Alice Genna distributed 31 assists, while adding four blocks and two digs.

Defensively, NCCU junior Kalin Russell dominated the net for the second consecutive match with six blocks and three kills, while freshman Marilyn Sherbondy collected a team-best nine digs.

NCCU dominated the first two sets. SC State managed to tie each set once, but the Eagles never relinquished the lead.

In the opening set, NCCU held a slim 13-8 advantage before going on a 12-5 run to close out the set, 25-13.

The second set was much of the same. NCCU blew open a 20-16 cushion with a 5-2 to seal the deal.

In the third set, NCCU trailed 12-9 before rolling off seven straight points for a 16-12 lead. SCSU could not recover from that spurt, as the Eagles scored seven of the last eight points for a 25-16 set victory.

NCCU improves to 5-18 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC, while SCSU falls to 6-10 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC.

The Eagles have nine days away from competition before returning to action on Oct. 23 at UNC-Wilmington.
