Box Score NCCU v. Campbell
ELON, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – The North Carolina Central University volleyball team concluded the Elon Phoenix Classic on somber note, falling to Campbell for the second time this season on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Elon, N.C.
The Eagles, who gave an impressive performance against Elon earlier in the day, could not find their second wind to outlast Campbell through a three-set (25-17, 25-8, 25-13) loss.
Despite the maroon and gray falling short on the court, sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao made a highlight for the Eagles as a member of the Elon Phoenix Classic All-Tournament Team. Kalao’s achievement this weekend marks her second all-tournament team honor.
Kalao circulated 16 assists in the loss, while leading in digs with seven. NCCU senior Shantel Moore paced the offense with six kills. She and fellow senior Raven King attained seven digs apiece in the match. Moore and senior Tasha-Gaye Richards led the blocking crusade by each assisting on two blocks.
Errors led to the Eagles three-set loss, with NCCU committing 20 hitting errors, two service errors and four blocking errors.
On a positive note, NCCU amassed 20 kills, dug 20 Campbell attacks and tallied two team blocks.
Campbell’s offense was led by junior outside hitter Ally Russo, who finished the night with nine kills. Sophomore setter Heather Wilson distributed 23 assists to her Camels, while senior liber Kelsey Campbell led in digs with 10. Pacing the blocks with three block assists on the night was senior middle blocker Annie Kobeski.
The Camels completed the win with 36 kills, two service errors, 37 digs and four team blocks.
NCCU drops to 0-11 on the season, while Campbell advances to 5-9.
NCCU returns to the nest for a three-game homestand beginning with a Tuesday, Sept. 20 match against UNC Asheville at 7:00 p.m. in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
