DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – In their final races as North Carolina Central University student-athletes seniors Crystal Shepherd, Jamar Jones and Charles Lindsey earned first place finishes during the annual Duke Twilight meet hosted by Duke University on Sunday, May 8 at the Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Shepherd seized a first place finish in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Shepherd completed the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.06 seconds, while completing the 400-meter dash in 55.54 seconds.
Jones grasped his first place win in 47.35 seconds in the 400-meter dash, while Lindsey ran to success during the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.31 seconds.
Freshman Anthonia Ballard beat out runs from Duke, Winthrop and Belmont Abbey for a win during the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.00 seconds.
On the men’s side, 16 Eagles clutched top ten finishes.
Matthew Winstead (freshman), Phillip Barren (sophomore), Nana Atakora-Bediako (sophomore) and Robert Corbitt (freshman) took second place in the 400-meter relay with a time of 42.27 seconds.
During the field events, the mighty maroon obtained five of their top finishes. Junior Kendall DeLapp placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.77 meters.
Atakora-Bediako and DeLapp leaped to second and fourth place finishes in the triple jump. Atakora-Bediako jumped 14.07 meters for second place, while DeLapp followed with a fourth place finish with a leap of 13.49 meters.
In the high jump, Louis Watkins jumped 1.89 meters to finish sixth. Senior Nealie Whitt threw the discus 46.16 meters to place fifth.
NCCU head coach Michael Lawson continued to stack the races with maroon and grey uniforms with the three student-athletes competing in the 100-meter dash. Barren, Corbitt and sophomore Zuri Sneed participated in the event. Barren placed fourth with a time of 10.92 seconds, Sneed finished with a time of 11.24 seconds for an eighth place finish and Corbitt followed Sneed with a ninth place finish in 11.32 seconds.
Brandon Addison competed in the 400-meter dash, completing the race in 48.80 seconds to finish fifth.
Lindsey obtained another top finish, this time in the 400-meter hurdles. The senior ran a time of 54.94 seconds for fourth, while freshman Travon Banks completed the race in sixth place with a time of 55.62 seconds.
In addition to Shepherd’s two first place finishes, 10 Lady Eagles supplied top ten finishes in the final meet of the season.
Freshman La’Creesha Gore placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.10 seconds. Senior Shadae Giles also participated in the 200-meter dash, she finished the race with a third place finish in 25.58 seconds.
Sophomore Taisha Parkins and freshman Ikea Long competed in the 800-meter dash. Parkins finished eighth in 2 minutes and 21 seconds, while Long completed the event with a 10th place finish in 2 minutes and 24 seconds.
Freshman Delesha Conquest ran the 100-meter hurdles in 14.92 seconds for a sixth place finish.
Three Lady Eagles obtained top finishes in the 400-meter hurdles: freshman Sararesa Hudson, Conquest and Ballard. Hudson placed third with a time of 1:02.05, Conquest came in fourth place in 1:02.48 and Ballard grasped a ninth place finish with a time of 1:05.67.
Jazmen Flagler and Jessica Blanks found their success with fifth place finishes. Flagler leaped 10.82 meters in the triple jump, as Blanks threw 31.55 meters during the discus throw.
The North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track and field squads will return to action in the fall with cross country competition.
