PALADINS SHUTOUT LADY EAGLES IN SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER

Furman pitching keeps NCCU off the plate

GREENVILLE, S.C. –
Despite five North Carolina Central University softball student-athletes slugging five hits, the Lady Eagles could not turn those hits into runs to surpass the Paladins of Furman University on a Tuesday, March 8 afternoon double-header in Greenville, S.C.
 
Over two games, NCCU combined five hits, zero runs and three errors. Three Lady Eagles went to bat on four occasions and connected on one ball apiece: Nadia Jefferies, Ashanti Stroud, Andrea Searls and Mae’Risha Watts.
 
Whitney Boykin seized the second hit on the afternoon for the maroon and grey on two times at bat.
 
Aurora Baker started in the circle for NCCU. In five innings against 28 batters, the junior pitcher allowed 14 hits and eight runs, while tossing eight errors and walked one batter.
 
NCCU head coach Michael Charlton placed Kayla McPeek on the mound for the second game of the twinbill. During McPeek’s 5.2 innings, she allowed 11 hits and eight runs. Along with one walk and five errors, while striking out two batters.
 
Furman opened the doubleheader swinging. The Paladins whacked four runs in the first inning led by short stop Jessie Homesley. Homesley hit two runs and contacted on three hits on three times at bat. Furman continued its valor at the plate bringing one runner home in the bottom of the second, two runners during the bottom of the fifth and seizing one final run to conclude game on in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Furman utilized two pitchers in the doubleheader, Lauren Collier and Kayla Suskauer tossed complete-game shutouts. Collier began on the mound facing 21 batters in 6.0 innings, the opening pitcher struck out six Lady Eagles and permitted two hits. Suskauer pitched for Furman for the second contest of the afternoon. Suskauer maintained the circle for 6.0 innings to face 24 batters, permitting three hits, three hits and tossing three strikeouts.
 
The NCCU bats were silent in the second game of the as well. While Furman seized its first run in the bottom of the first, the host squad went on to score two runs in the second inning, two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Furman concluded the contest with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Tuesday afternoon contest slips the Lady Eagles to 4-14, while Furman improves to 4-10 on the season.
 
NCCU continues its four-game road trip with a Thursday, March 10 doubleheader in Wilson, N.C., against Barton College slated for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
