Box Score 2 NCCU at Campbell: Game 1 / Game 2
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University suffered a two-game loss in Buies Creek, N.C., falling to Campbell University 8-3 and 11-3 on Thursday, March 17.
During game one of the doubleheader, the maroon and grey and the Camels’ bats were silent, neither team scored a run until the bottom of the fourth inning, where Campbell scored its first run. The Camels went on the score four runs in the fifth inning and Campbell hit runs in the final three innings.
The visiting Lady Eagles scored their three runs in the sixth inning. Nadia Moreta, Whitney Boykin and Kristina Williams hit the three NCCU runs apiece. Cember Carmichael paced the runners batted with two RBIs.
While three pitchers threw from the mound for NCCU, sophomore Shamika Chavis-Hodge started in the circle and pitched two innings. But junior Aurora Baker received the loss in her 2.2 innings on the mound. Baker allowed five hits, five runs and walked two batters against 16 batters. NCCU sophomore Kayla McPeek concluded the game in the circle with 1.1 innings of pitching. McPeek allowed three hits and three runs, while striking out one batter.
Taylor McGee led the Campbell offense with two RBI’s on three times at bat. Four Lady Camels obtained single RBIs, including Katie Hinton’s one runner batted, while batting four times and earning three hits and two runs. Winning pitcher Katie Woodcock dominated the mound for 6.0 innings, striking out nine batters, while allowing four hits and three runs against 22 batters.
Carmichael continued to utilize her swing for the Lady Eagles in the second contest of the doubleheader. Freshman Regina Diaz and junior Andrea Searls assisted Carmichael in runs with one apiece.
NCCU head coach Michael Charlton began the second game with Baker at the mound. She took her second loss on the mound after allowing five hits and three runs against 11 batters. McPeek relieved Baker, pitching 2.1 innings for the Lady Eagles. McPeek permitted six hits and six runs, pitched one walk while facing 15 batters. Chavis-Hodge concluded the Lady Eagles pitching stint, in the final inning of play she allowed three hits and two runs.
The Camels found success in the runs area in each inning. Campbell began the contest with two runs in the first inning and sealed their 11 run win with six runs in the fifth inning. Keeli Michael directed the offense with three runs and four hits on four times at bat. Lizzie Goldbach and Sarah Forgacs earned two runs and two hits apiece, while going to bat three times each. Lauren Stephan pitched for 4.0 innings of the five inning game, allowing two hits and three runs, while pitching five strikeouts. Christina Melton concluded the contest with one inning at the mound, throwing two strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles travel to Delaware State Unviersity for the DSU Capital Softball Classic on March 19-20 in Dover, Del. NCCU will face the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at 10 a.m. and Mount St. Mary’s at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 and Delaware State at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 20.
