CARY, N.C. (Thomas Brooks Park) – The North Carolina Central University softball team suffered a shutout on Tuesday, March 1, falling 5-0 to the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington in Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
NCCU catcher Andrea Searls and first baseman Amanda Bullock slugged the only two Lady Eagles hits.
Kayla McPeek began on the mound for the Lady Eagles. In two innings, the sophomore faced 12 batters and allowed four runs and eight hits to receive the loss. Junior Aurora Baker was next to the circle, as she threw two strikeouts and permitted one run and two hits against 14 batters in three innings. NCCU head coach Michael Charlton made one final pitching change in the seven inning, sending Shamika Chavis-Hodge to the mound. With one inning in the circle, the sophomore faced seven batters and allowed one hit and a walk.
The Seahawks seized their first win of the season by sending four batters home in the first two innings of the game, and concluded with a single run in the top of the fifth. While UNC Wilmington scored five runs, three runs came off of runners batted in. Camry Wagner, Kimmie Stewart and Daniela Torres created the three UNCW RBIs, while Wagner and Caitlin Cavarra earned two runs apiece.
Amanda Davenport maintained the mound for the entire game. The Seahawk junior pitched 11 strikeouts, allowed two hits, and walked two of the 26 batters she faced.
On the defensive end, Bullock sustained her base with six putouts. Second baseman Ashanti Stroud, right fielder Mae’Risha Watts, who caught a stellar fifth inning pop up, and Searls finished with three putouts apiece. Third baseman Nadia Moreta was quick on the throws, assisting on four plays.
The Lady Eagles hit the road for a four-game road trip, traveling to Furman on March 8, Barton College on March 10, Campbell on March 17 and to the Delaware State Tournament on March 18.
