CARY, N.C. (Thomas Brooks Park) – The North Carolina Central University softball team (5-11) concluded the Lady Eagle Classic on Sunday, Feb. 26 in Thomas Brooks Park with a 5-1 loss to Siena and a 10-2 defeat by Delaware State in their second meeting of the weekend.
Freshman left fielder Cember Carmichael led the Lady Eagles in runners batter in, sending three runners home in the two contests. The freshman contributed to the two runs scored by the mighty maroon in their fall to Delaware State.
In the circle, the Lady Eagles saw action from three different pitchers. Kayla McPeek pitched a complete game against Siena. Even though she received the loss, the sophomore kept the Saints bats silent in three of the four innings, only allowing five runs and 13 hits while facing 33 batters.
Junior Aurora Baker started on the mound in the game against Delaware State. Iin one inning she allowed five runs on five hits and pitched one strikeout. Shamika Chavis-Hodge relieved Baker and pitched the four remaining innings, as the sophomore permitted five runs on eight hits and pitched two strikeouts.
Taking the win for Siena was Jessika-Jo Sandrini, who allowed one run on six hits in on seven innings at the mound. She threw two walks and eight strikeouts on 29 batters. Sandrini, Natasha Powlowski, Kayla Kaminsky, Courtney Brinkman and Samantha Ray each earned an RBI in the win. Shannon Jones and Sandrini, who led in hits, each went 4-for-3 on the day.
Defensively for the Lady Eagles, freshman first base Amanda Bullock attained six putouts, while junior third baseman Nadia Moreta assisted on three. Kaminsky (first base) and Powlowski (catcher) led in putouts, the first baseman managed nine, while catcher stopped eight runners. Sandrini and second baseman Alyssa Sceppaguerico contributed with three assists apiece.
To seize their 5-1 victory, the Saints reached home plate twice in the top of the fourth and the top of the sixth, and sealed the victory with one unanswered run in the seventh inning.
Delaware State, who entered the matchup following a 12-1 victory over South Carolina State, connected on 13-of-27 at the plate. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes struck in the second inning with seven runs and made the eight-run rule an option with a single run in the third inning. NCCU marshaled two runs in the bottom of the fifth, however its effort was not enough to continue the contest.
Casey Beighley, who started on the mound in the first weekend meeting on Friday, Feb. 25, earned the win. The pitcher allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out six Lady Eagles and tossing two walks.
The Lady Eagles continue the 2011 campaign welcoming the University of North Carolina at Wilmington on Tuesday, March 1 to Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. The contest is a single 3 p.m. game.
