Box Score 2 Final Game Statistics: Game 1/ Game 2
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina Central University softball team drops to 3-7 on the season as the Spartans of University of South Carolina Upstate utilized opening inning runs to sweep the Lady Eagles 8-0 and 13-1 in a doubleheader diamond matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 23 in Spartanburg, S.C.
The first pitch of the contest began at 2:00 p.m., with sophomore Kayla McPeek on the mound. In the first inning, both teams went scoreless. The top of the second inning belonged to USC Upstate, the Spartans rounded the diamond three times, leading the maroon and grey 3-0. At the end of the fourth inning, the South Carolina host team reached home plate on four more occasions. With seven runs under their cleats, USC Upstate ended the contest by the run rule in the fifth inning. To conclude game with a score of 8-0, the Spartans scored one last run in the top of the fifth.
Junior left fielder Kim Brasil was the heavy hitter of USC Upstate with four runners batted in and three hits over four times at bat. Freshman catcher Ericka Harris and junior short stop Cheyanna Ohlrich both hit the plate on three junctures each, both Spartans knocked two hits and earned one RBI apiece. Junior pitcher Morgan Childers maintained the mound for all five innings, pitching 13 strike outs against 16 batters.
McPeek held down the mound for 4.2 innings, allowing 13 hits and eight runs.
The Spartans hit the first inning of second game with authority, nine USC Spartans hit home plate seizing an early 9-0 lead. In the top of the third, the green and white furthered their lead with two additional runs. Freshman third baseman Amanda Bullock was the lone eagle batting runs home, obtaining the mighty maroon’s first run of the game in the fourth inning. USC Upstate brought the afternoon to a close with two more runs, taking the second win with a score of 13-1.
Senior Ashanti Stroud pitched 2.0 innings at the mound facing 15 batters. Stroud permitted nine hits, nine runs and walked five batters. Pitcher Shamika Chavis-Hodge took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings. At the mound, the sophomore struck out two batters, allowed five hits and four runs.
Second baseman Haley Sheehan cracked the bat during the second game bringing in four batters over four times at bat for the Spartans. As the winning pitcher, Alexander pitched 3.0 innings, struck out four batters and only allowed one win. Amber Hamilton struck out three batters and permitted three hits and one run.
The Lady Eagles will enjoy a three-game homestead, hosting Delaware State on Friday, Feb. 25 and welcoming Delaware State, Siena College, South Carolina State and Youngstown State for the Lady Eagle Classic on Feb. 26-27 in Cary, N.C. at Thomas Brooks Park.
